bits & automatic updates won't start

BITS fails with errorcode -2147012892 in errorlog code 2147954404 (0x80072EE4).
Automatic updates won't start (start & stops immediately). Windows update
doesn't work.
I've tried a variety of suggestions as posted here, but no luck.
Please Help!
