BITS (Background Intelligence Transfer Service) causes crash

I'm running Vista Ultimate 32-bit and every time I enable the BITS service,
it crashes svchost.exe and causes Windoes Aero to go all funky (looks like
Windows Classic style in some aspects). The reason that I have my thread in
this group is because BITS is directly used by Windows Update and the fact
that I have to have BITS disabled to have my computer actually run means that
I can't use Automatic Updates.

The problems started after a failed install of my Bluetooth device's
software (BlueSoleil) but it never got completely installed and even if I
uninstalled the BT drivers, it still doesn't work. It could have been some
updates it installed after I restarted my computer after the failed install
of BlueSoleil. I also could not use System Restore to go back because my
restore points just got corrupted. This started happening not 48 hours after
a fresh install of Vista.

I really don't want to reinstall and reactivate Vista again to try and
resolve this and I can't get MSFT help because I got my version of Vista from
MSDN. Does anyone have any solutions besides removing BITS completely and
dealing with it? Is anyone having the same problems I'm having?

Here is the error information from my error log when it first started
happening:

Faulting application svchost.exe_BITS, version 6.0.6000.16386, time stamp
0x4549adc4, faulting module qmgr.dll, version 7.0.6000.16386, time stamp
0x4549bd9f, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00017412, process id
0x488, application start time 0x01c7b6f028a1a73c.

I get the exact same issue and I haven't loaded anything lately. I too had
to go back to my provider (Dell), but they only made it worst. Now I can't
download any update.

I'm about ready to toss my Dell AND Vista... BOTH have been a huge pain ever
since I got it!!!

Nevertheless the expertise needed to get BITS repaired may not be here
(in the WU NG). ; )

Try using bitsadmin? E.g. in a cmd window enter:

bitsadmin /util /version /verbose

What happens? Compare with poster John Riehl's results?

The following KB article might apply to this case:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940520. After rebooting the system, re-enable
the BITS service.

If you continue to see anything mal-functioning after following the steps,
please reply to this post and we will try to troubleshoot the issue further.
We appologize for the inconvenience this issue may be causing.

Thanks
