BITS is hung starting, W2KSP4 WU failing

I have been unable to successfully run WUpdate and cannot even open IE to the
WU web site without hanging IE. I have found that BITS is showing as
"starting", but never gets started. WindowsUPdate.log shows that BITS is the
problem with FATAL errors trying to contact the BITS service and then
followed by failures to GetUserTolkenFromSessionId.

Any ideas how to proceed?

XP users have bitsadmin /util to repair their BITS.

Do Win2K users have the same tool available?

If the windows 2000 machine have BITS 2.0 (KB842773) installed, then the
BITSadmin command (/util /repairservice) should work.

If that's true I think the KB842773 article should be updated to say so.
That would be a very useful feature to know about.

Or do you mean that after that is installed that W2K users can then download
and use the XPsp2 or a W2003S version of bitsadmin? <eg>

Downloaded and successfully installed KB842773 and it got BITS started after
a reboot. I am watching to see if WU will succeed now. I have not tried to
download and install the BITSAdmin Tool as I don't know whether it is needed
yet. Thanks for getting me out of the hole I was in with BITS being hung.

Sorry for not being clear. bitsadmin.exe works on BITS in different versions
of windows. You can take bitsadmin.exe from XP (resouce CD), windows 2003, or
Vista and use it on windows 2000.
