The ususal: run first disk cleanup, then Spybot and/or Ad-aware. Boot
to safe mode and do a complete virus scan. When verified clean, boot
normally and run system file checker from a command prompt, type
sfc[space]/scannow. Have your install CD handy. Following sfc, try
again the BITS update. If that fails again, then review the default
settings for all system services using this site (do not use the
blackviper site, IMO)
http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm Set all services to the
Windows default except those that are known not be be needed in your
version of XP. If this likewise fails, the it might be time for a
repair install of XP.
