Bits - revisited

Win2k sp4, Bits2 files versions verified.
Bits service manual, dependencies all automatic, and started.
Nothing helpfull in Event Viewer
An *intermittent problem*:
Automatic updates (download & notify) doesn't function.
A manual update runs, finds critical updates (Dec 12th), but installation
fails on all with a service not started.
In services, start the Bits service, re run update and all install
correctly.(auto update functions also)
Any insights?
TY

I know that one of the changes to AU was having BITS set to Automatic in
services. Try leaving it as Automatic and see if everything works.

I know there is a key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost

In the right panel, you should see BITSGroup set to BITS, and wugroup set to
wuauserv.
These both are REG_MULTI_SZ types.

On W2K, you will need to use regedt32

These match the names of the keys under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost

Leave BITS Service as Automatic and at next reboot, check for Event Viewer
log errors.

Where are you seeing these symptoms?
What specifically is showing in WindowsUpdate.log to document them?

BTW notice that BITS has a service dependency (RPCSS).

In XP Pro I can use bitsadmin /util command.
I don't know if your OS has a similar tool or not.

It wasn't very clear from your post below whether the BITS service is not
starting or not. Could you please answer the following:

1. Is the BITS service running fine?
2. If not, do you get any error when you manually start it?
net start BITS
3. Please copy sc.exe from an XP machine to the win2k machine and run the
following command and post the output:

sc.exe qc bits
sc.exe queryex bits
sc.exe sdshow bits
