further to my last post about problems with windows update:

I have my setting at"inform but do not download"

when i ask the autoupdater to download sp2 (or indeed any other recent
update) the modem lights flash briefly then stop and the icon vanishes from
the taskbar.

I have windows installer 3.1 rev2 and have updated to v6 updater.

update log is as follows:

Well, it's perfectly normal!
Before you'd get Zillions tips here to fix something that actually isn't
broken, I can assure you it's perfectly normal.

As per your settings:

A number of suggestions:
Do some cleanups and then get the full XP Service Pack 2.

Use Windows Explorer. Go to C:\Windows\System32 (yours may be at \WINNT\System32 )
If you have a sub-folder called * Catroot2 * (not Catroot) rename the
folder to CR2OLD. Better yet, delete all the contents of CATROOT2.

You must make sure these Win XP services are enabled and running:

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
Cryptographic Services
Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
System Restore Service

Go to Start menu >Run > MSCONFIG <enter>
Click on the "Services" Tab & review these services. They should have a green "tick/check" mark on left; and status "Running" on the far right.

Do a basic sanity check .... insure you have at least 300 MB of free space on your C drive (assuming Windows is on C).

From main Windows Start menu, select RUN, type in
CMD <Enter-key>

type in
net stop wuauserv <Enter-key>

Go to Windows Explorer.
Look on your system drive (usually C ) and look at the Windows folder name. Like Windows or WINNT.
Modify following as appropriate.
If your Windows folder is C:\Windows. Look at this folder
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download

If you find files in there, delete them. That folder is where files are stored from W U downloads.

Go back to Command prompt window.
type in
net start wuauserv <Enter-key>

EXIT <Enter-key>

For XP Service Pack 2:
There are other ways to get it besides the online Windows Update.
If you have broadband or DSL internet access, you can download the Service Pack 2 file and then burn it to CD.

If you have plenty of HD space ( 266MB to store the full Service Pack 2 file, plus, 1 GB FREE space on your Windows volume (on hard drive) for the service pack update process, you should get the full network file.
Link to MS page is here http://tinyurl.com/5bobl

Highly advise that you review and follow the pre-installation suggestions, such as disabling Antivirus & all user startups and screensavers.

I also restarted the download and did as Plop advised (rebooted)

Alas it still flickered when first accessing the the net then stopped.

Steve,

If you have any web surfing/guarding / security add-ons, be sure to close them before going to Windows Update.
Temporarily disable antivirus while you visit Windows Update.
You should keep your firewall program on. But please post as to which you have & if your firewall has Microsoft Windows Update in its white list (trusted sites).

It seems that this pc has serious permissions-type issues.

Begin with these steps:

1. Click "Start," and then click "Run".

2. In the Open box, type regedit and then click "OK".

Make a save copy of registry. Select File, then Export. On the Range
option-tab, select the ALL option. Save the file to a unique name.

3. Locate and select the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\WindowsUpdate

4. click "Edit," and then click "Permissions."

5. Click "Add," and then type "Everyone" in the dialog box that appears.

6. Click "Check Names," and then click "OK."

7. Select "Everyone" in the "Group or user names" list.

8. Under Permissions for "Everyone," select the "Full Control" check box in the "Allow" column.
Note that the "Read" check box in the "Allow" column is now also selected.

9. Select each user, in turn, in the "Group or user names" list, and then verify that no check boxes are selected in the "Deny" column.
Clear any check boxes that are selected in the "Deny" column.

10. Click "Advanced," and then select the "Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown
here that apply to child objects" check box, and then click "OK."

11. Click "Yes" if you are prompted for confirmation.

Do this for now. More to follow.

Hi,

Error 80246005 is

SUS_E_DM_NONETWORK
Network connection was not available

It has been reports in the newsgroup that deleting the
SoftwareDistribution\DataStore folder have solved the error
0x80246005 for some.

Please delete the DataStore folder located here:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\
(%windir% is typically C:\Windows or C:\Winnt)

Note that a side effect of deleting the DataStore folder is that you
lose your WU v5 History listing (not critical).

Note that you will need to stop the "Automatic Updates" service before
you are allowed to delete this folder, e.g by doing the following:

Start/Run --> services.msc

Then find "Automatic Updates" in the list, and double click on it.

If the service status is "Started", press the Stop button.

You can now delete the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder.

If deleting the DataStore folder doesn't work, delete the
SoftwareDistribution folder also.

Check the Windows Explorer "View" options --- set it to show you all folders; all system folders; & hidden files.
Bring up Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options/ select VIEW Tab and look at all of settings listed.

"CHECK" (turn on) Display the contents of system folders.

Under column, Hidden files and folders----choose ( *select* ) Show hidden files and folders.
Next, un-check Hide extensions for known file types.
Next un-check Hide protected operating system files.

The following thanks to Harish G [MSFT] & Pat Walters [MSFT].

Review the permission on the softwaredistribution folder. Follow the
below given procedure to fix this problem. (Credit goes to Harish G [MSFT])
<Quote>

If you are using windows XP Professional:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type: %windir%
4. Press <Enter> or click OK. If prompted, click "Show these files and
folders"
5. Right-click on the folder "SoftwareDistribution" (notice no space between
software and distribution)
6. Click Properties
7. Click the Security tab
8. In the "Group or user names" click on the Administrators to select them.
9. In the "Permissions for Administrators, make sure "Full Control" is
checked (even if grayed out)
10. Click Advanced
11. Make sure you are on the Permissions tab
12. Again, select the Administrators group
13. Select the checkbox "Replace permission entries on all child objects
with entries..."
14. Click the Owner tab
15. With Administrators selected, check the box "Replace owner on
subcontainers and objects"
16. Click OK out of the Advanced Security Settings for SoftwareDistribution.
Confirm you want to take the actions you took.
17. Click OK again, this time out of SoftwareDistribution Properties.
18. Close the window open to C:\Windows, or whatever directory correlates
with %windir% from step 3.
19. Click Start
20. Click Run
21. Type: services.msc
22. When this window opens, verify that both of the following services are
started. If they are not, start them:
a. Automatic Updates
b. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)

If you are using Windows XP Home Edition:
1. Reboot the machine and enter Safe Mode.
a. Reboot the machine
b. Just as the machine goes black and is starting to come up, start
pressing F8 every one second.
c. Repeat the previous step until you obtain a menu, and in that menu is
an entry "Safe Mode"
2. Login as an administrator
3. Perform steps 1-18 above
4. Reboot
5. Perform steps 19-22 above

ok i seem to have the auto updater back in action.

I wish i could tell everyone else who may have similar problems how i did it
but i messed so much, i can't say for sure what put it right.

I did everything suggested above and it didnt seem to make any difference.
so i went back to a previous restore point. redownloaded the V6 updater
software and it suddenly started working again.

Thanks to all who posted

Steve
