BITS WU Problem

Hi!

Ever since I upgraded my computer from Me to XP, I have not been able to
download the updates and security patches. I have tried both Automatic
Updates and manual Windows Updates.

When I finally started investigating the problem, I found that I was getting
a Background Intelligent Transfer Service and WinHTTP download error. That
would be error code 80246008. I tried using the on-line troubleshooter
(modifying the register to show BITS, attempting to make BITS auto start),
but so far, no luck.

When I go to Start/Run/services.msc and tell it to Start BITS, it tells me
"Could not start the Background Intelligence Transfer Service on Local
Computer. Error 126: The specified module could not be found."

I tried to re-download BITS from the Microsoft website (BITS Client
Component Version 1.5), but although it downloads ok, my computer says it is
"not a valid Win32 Application". I've tried starting from the website and
downloading it to my computer with the same result.

Now what can I do? Help? It worked before... Bittorrent works just
fine... McAfee works just fine... How can I fix this so I can get my
computer updated?

Thanks,
Raya

Error 0x80246008 during the download process
This error may occur if the Background Intelligent Transfer Service is not enabled.
Note: Even if you are not using the Automatic Updates feature, the service must be

Thank you, but that does not help. As I mentioned in my initial question,
troubleshooting solution #1 that you provided does not work (unless I'm not
doing it right). That would be editing the register to put BITS into the
list of services. I put it in the register where directed, and I think I did
it right despite the incomplete/inaccurate directions.

Also, I had already tried the first fix in troubleshooting solution 2 (start
up BITS in services.msc) without any success. When it told me that it
couldn't find the module needed, I just stopped there and came in here.

For fun, I decided to try the second and third fixes in solution 2. Fix 2
(starting the even log) was unneccessary (already started). Fix 3 (regedit
qmgc.dll and regedit qmgcproxy.dll) gave me the same response both times:
"LoadLibrary ("qmgc.dll") failed. The specified module could not be found."
"qmcgproxy.dll" showed up the second time, of course.

Any other suggestions out there?

++++

To be sure, you can create and run the VBScript (by double clicking on it)
in this post:

Hi;

Try downloading the newer BITS 2.0 version, which is what your XP system
needs. You can grab it here:

Ah! Almost. At least it started downloading this time! Now I get a
KB842773 error. "An error updating your system has occurred. Windows XP has
been partially updated and may not work properly."

Seems to be working fine, except for the inability to update from Microsoft...

A bit more information... Looks like I updated from Me to XP somewhere in
the area of July 17, 2004. I had two successful updates of this exact same
file (BITS 2 and HTTP) since then: July 17 and July 27. Ever since August 11
when I activated Automatic Updates, I have not been able to download
anything. Maybe the Auto Update is causing a problem?

I tried putting in my XP disc and downloading various things including .Net
and .Net SP2, but it didn't work.

Hi;

Can you try creating a new user account, one with full Administrator
privileges, and then trying WU using that account?

All of the accounts on this machine have full Administrator privelages. I
went to the account set up as the default administrator for my McAfee
products and tried to update. Still nothing.....

Hurray! Microsoft fixed whatever the problem was! I'm not sure what they
did, but sometime today they apparently modified a program and I was FINALLY
able to get the BITS/HTTP update, and after that all of my security updates.

All I know is that on the fifth or sixth time I came in to access this help
group to look for more ideas, Microsoft told me that I needed to update my
"Checking for Updates" program (or something like that). After it did that,
it checked for Updates and everything went smoothly! At last.

Thanks for all of your help!
Raya
