Black out on shut down

If a program doesn't close by itself, say a document that needs to save.
Vista gives you (litteraly) about 2 seconds to do something about it. Then
the screen goes black all you can do is shut down ungracefully (data is lost)
or cancel.
Is the any way to alter this behavior? Even increasing the time before
"black screen of crippledom" would help.
Thanks,
Charles

Is it a forced shutdown or are you doing it?

Vista shoudl ask you if you want to force the program to shutdown!

For the example of a open document and a restart. It asks if I want to save
the document, waits about 2 seconds and goes to the "black screen of
croppldom". From there the only choices are cancel and Restart now. If you
choose restart now whatever is open is closed.

Sounds like it could be a hardware issue. If you have flaky memory or a
CPU/Motherboard problem, that could cause Vista to shut down. If you
purchased your PC from one of the big guys, download their system
diagnostics tools and see if it reports any errors.

Sounds like I misunderstood your earlier question. By either I meant either
I started or a program did it. These are not anomolous restarts I just don't
like the way Vista acts when they happen. I would like more than 2 seconds
to decide what to do about a program that needs to ask a question before it
can quit.
Thanks,
Charles
