Hi all,

After running RC1 for 2 weeks, I went to boot last night and I just get a
black screen with the build number in the lower right corner. I tried to go
into set up on the boot disk as restore to a restore point, but it runs
through 100% and tells me it could not restore. I made no system changes
the 4 days prior to the problem.

I really don't want to have to reinstall and load all my apps again.
HP8300 Laptop
nVidia GForce 7400
1 gig ram
160 harddrive

Please help, I have a $1,600 paperweight.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi,

If you didn't want to reinstall anything, you shouldn't have installed a
beta OS on the system. Having to start over clean is often par for the
course. The download page has a bold, red warning about this.

If the system is booting fully, then I would suspect a display adapter
issue. Have you tried Safe mode and does it work normally there?

I understand the ramifications of loading a beta OS, that doesn't mean I
have to be happy about reloading everything, and it doesn't mean that I
can't try to avoid it.
I am assuming the OS is loading fully, however I can't tell. HD stops
spinning, mouse works, build number shows.
I tried safe mode, no change.
Instead of just the build number, I see safe mode in all corners, and build
number at top.

Nothing works.

Can I load RC2 on top, or does that require a clean install as well.

Thanks,

Chris

Don't know about RC2, but doesn't seem logical if the base is defective.
Have you considered a repair install. You wouldn't have to reinstall
applications, only updates.

Tried a repair, no dice. Booted from the dvd, and am able to browse the
hard drives, so at least I can get my data into another partition.
Can I change video drivers from a command prompt?
Any other diag's I can do from command prompt to see if there is an error?

Thanks

Not sure where you are running from, sfc /? will give you the options for
system file checker if it is available from where you are running
Pretty hard to change drives unless you know the one to either replace or
delete. Most driver istallation programs select the appropriate drivers
based on a scan of the system.
I don't know the boot options in Vista but VGA mode for XP let you set
resolution and refresh rates which can cause a black screen, but usually not
a partially black screen
