black screen on log in. explorer .exe not running.

hav used system restore, this fixed the problem.
it has now come back and i cant restore to an old system restore point.

I ran regedit in safe mode and changed shell setting back to explorer.exe it
was explorer.exe svchost.exe. any ideas?????

I had this same problem when using mapped network drives. Remove the mapped
network drives and reboot. That fixed it for me.

That's a classic symptom of virus infection. Here are general
malware/virus removal steps:

Include scanning with David Lipman's Multi_AV and follow instructions to
do all scans in Safe Mode. Please see the special Notes regarding using
Multi_AV in Vista.

I think your answer is better suited to the OP's complaint. I've misread
what he posted.

Click start (the round button), then "Computer". Network drives should be
listed in the right hand pane. Right click them, and disconnect. Although
after rereading your post, I don't think that's your problem, but one never
knows.
