black screen with mouse pointer only

In my Vista home premium, I can only see the mouse pointer (which I can move
around) against a black/grey background. Its the same either in Safe mode or
undet Advance boot menu. Alt/Ctlr/Deleete does not bring out the Task Manager
and neither does the Last Known Configuration works. How can I get my labtop
to works normally. Thanks
