Black Screen Sfter Update

Hi Folks,

Hoping someone might be able to help me. I went to MS update this morning
and downloaded their tool to use to update all products, quite a number of
things were needed and one was a driver, NVIDA Geforce 4 MX420.

After restarting my screen remained black and I waited quite abit of time as
I knew I had downloaded anumber of updates and hot fixes.

I finally had to shut it off by the power button and I went into safe mode
and rolled back driver on Video Adapter as that is where the driver was ithe
device manager and it is signed by MS.

After I restarted it was all back to normal, yet, the driver is still there
and I would like to understand what happened and how I can safely remove
that driver and reinstall what I had. Maybe it wasn't the driver, I just
don't know.

I did not mean to download that driver and have passed it by for a while as
I read some remarks in the newsgroups that the drivers from the manufacter
is better to installed than Windows.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what happen? Did I fixe it or is it
lying in wait tos trike another time?
What problems may occur from having to shut down the computer by way of the
power button?

Thanks to all who posts a reply.

Pike

What happened is exactly what you have reported.

You installed a video driver from Windows Update, after passing it by several
times, and having read advice to NOT install video drivers from Windows
Update.

You fixed it by uninstalling the driver.

Unless you're having video problems, don't worry about upgrading video
drivers. With video, the adage "if it ain't broke, don't fix it", is a good
policy.

If you successfully rolled back the driver, then it is no longer installed.

I know, I could kick myself for letting that happen. I actually thought I
had removed it from the list and then watched it tell me its being install
and I froze not knowing want to do. Then, I convince myself, I would be one
of the lucky ones. :-)

Help! I'm not sure if my problem is the same or not, but today I went to
Windows Update and downloaded ATI Technologies Video Radeon X300 Series and
my monitor has not been the same since. It did not go black but the type
size and everything is messed up. I have tweaked and tweaked and cannot get
it back to normal. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You go to control panel and open system clcik on hardware and then device
manager.
Once you locate the driver( check display adapter that is where mine was)
then right click and it gives you an option to roll back to an the one
prior.

However, it wouldn't hurt to create a system resore first. Don't mess with
anything else, though.

Good luck.

Pa Bear, why are you posting that link? I don't understand what you are
trying to say.

I know I posted about the problem in a different newsgroup, but, it was the
wrong newsgroup and I am posting in the right one now.

The problem of the black screen is gone, however, I was in the add and
remove program and the driver showed up in my add and remove list. I thought
it had been rolled back. So, I checked the device manager and it shows its
installed. I don't dare remove it from tadd and remove and that is probably
why it shows back up in device manager as being installed.

The problem does seems to be over, however, I am trying to understand
things, not to mess around with it now, its a in case the problem raises its
head again, I need to know how to remove it properly, since it is in my add
and remove program. I have never seen a driver in there before.

Anyways, I don't understand what you are saying as I haven't learned your
way, yet.

Regards

Pike

I was suggesting that the problems about which you posted to the various
newsgroups were related and caused by installing the driver update from
Windows Update.

Now, you rolled back to the previous install and everything's OK, save that
the driver you'd installed from WinUp is found in Add/Remove Programs? I
suggest you follow the First Rule of Computing: If it ain't broke, don't fix
it. (IOW, don't worry about the entry in A/RP.)

Ok, Bear, I understand. Things have stopped acting up and I will do as you
say and stop worrying about the driver in my Add and Remove program.

Thank you
