Blank emoticons

Hi.

Whenever someone sends me a message with a custom emoticon in it, that I
don't allready have, there's just a blank spot where the emoticon should have
been.
I can still rightclick the blanks spot and add it to my own collection, but
it just adds a blank emoticon (doh!).

I started by installing 8.5 (which was the one that came from home.live.com)
When that didn't work, I uninstalled everything associated with Live and
Messenger and installed V8.1 instead but the problem is the same.

I have search high and low and found only a few with similiar problems. None
of the suggestions have helped.
I have cleared all my temporary internet files, cookies etc. I have reduced
the size om my temporary internet cache to 8mb. The history is set to 0 days.
I have made sure that my locale was selected in my account (Denmark).
I have disabled programs like ÜberIcon etc.
Reboot'ed for the "god-knows-which"th time.

The funny thing is, that my wife sits 2 feet from me, and hers works like a
charm.
We started with the same setup except that she had older versions of MSN
Messenger installed prior to Live Messenger 8.1. Mine was a clean install.
Also, she has not filled her profile so her locale is not selected at all.
I didn't either at first.

This is really getting on my nerves - how hard can it be to show a gif image
:-(

Can anyone help me? Please!!! ;-)

Thanks.

Pax.

Greetings Pax,

A lot of the information you're finding is old. For instance, Messenger no longer saves
emoticons in the Temporary Internet Files folder and hasn't for quite some time.

What you're generally describing is usually the result of a firewall blocking the incoming
transfer for the emoticon -- ZoneAlarm for instance is well known for doing this. If this
applies to you, uninstall the firewall completely (don't just turn it off) to validate it's
the problem and then reinstall it. You'll be amazed how often this works.

Hi Jonathan.

Thanks for your reply, but unfortunatly that's not it either.
I do not have ZoneAlarm and I also tried to disable the Win XP Firewall
completely.
However, I do have 2 routers (one where the ADSL comes in which connects to
a wifi router that my pc's ere connected to.)
They work as firewalls themselves, but my wife's pc (on the same network)
works fine, so I don't think that's the problem.

We also tried creating our own emoticon on her pc with one of our own gif's
and that actually worked. We only have problems with the ones she downloaded
her self or got via other messages.

Come to think of it, perhaps the problem is not with my messenger after all?!?
We did change her profile e-mail and ended up copying all her emoticons from
her old directory to the new one. Perhaps some registration info got lost?

Well, I ended up using the MSNBackup software, you recommended someone else
in another thread, to copy all her emoticons, winks etc to my pc, so perhaps
we should consider the problem solved.

While your answer didn't help me directly, it got me thinking, so I will
thank you just the same ;-)
