My Vista Ultimate had been running for about a week, then suddenly I
had only a black screen. Except for the toolbar at the bottom, and
start menus, and dialog boxes still displayed. Apparently all the
applications were running fine. It's just actual windows that
wouldn't display. I poked at it some, and it turned into just a white
screen (still showing the toolbar).
I right-clicked on the toolbar and selected Task Manager. Like dialog
boxes, task manager displayed fine. I had Task Manager list all
processes (which asked for permission, but dialog boxes displayed
OK). And I asked task manager to "End Process" dwm, the desktop
window manager. Voila, all my windows showed up again! Except they
aren't semi-transparent anymore.
