Remember, your words have to substitute for what our eyes might notice.
One of the checks for relevance of the suggested article would be
the associated entry in the System log. Did you check the System log
and did you see such a record? For that matter did you check the
WindowsUpdate.log and see if that 0x80073712 code is present there?
Is any other code present there?
What about the second symptom the article refers to, concerning the
"Windows Features dialog box"? Did you try testing that case too?
What were the results?
FWIW I don't use Vista so I can't do any of these tests myself
but your symptom--blank forms in pages from the Windows Update site
reminds me of similar symptoms which can be resolved by making sure
that the user has a valid Language Preference or by modifying the associated
URLs appropriately so that they can have a &LN= parameter in them.
One way that those particular scenarios might occur is if your Language
Preferences is blank. So please check that (in IE: Alt-T,O,Alt-L)
and tell us what is there.
Your image doesn't show a URL in an IE Address bar?
How do you find out what URL you are using to get that page?
Try right-click, Properties? Use View Source? Use the TIF viewer?
(e.g. press Alt-T,O,Alt-S,V and then modify the view to be Details,
Arrange Icons by Last Accessed. You'll be able to see the page's
cached components at the bottom of the viewer.)
BTW I'm cross-posting this to a Vista newsgroup in case these
analogies don't apply on your OS in this scenario.
Another way of obtaining the necessary details would be to run Fiddler2
and see exactly what URL is being requested. Or in the event that the
page being rendered is completely local, e.g., from some system modules,
you could capture that information by running FileMon.
