Can anyone point me in the direction of a document that tells how to disable
SP2 for XP when a user does a windows update? We won't approve it yet in SUS
but I don't want any of my users to install this when it becomes available
by doing a windows update. There is supposed to be a way to disallow users
from downloading certain updates using GPand AD, does anyone have any info?

Hi Jeff,

You can use this method.

Goto HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUp date

Add a DWord called "DoNotAllowXPSP2"

If the value is '1' delivery of Windows XP SP2 via WU and AU is disabled.

If the value is not '1' or if the registry setting doesn't exist, the system
will be able to get Windows XP SP2 if the Windows Update site is accessible
or if AU is configured to get updates from Windows Update.

Hope that helps,

-David Herman

That does help David, and I understand it. But what is the easiest way to do
it for 2800 users? I was told (By our microsoft sales rep) that there was a
new adm template that would allow this easily through group policy. True?

Hi

Relevant for this registry value:

<quote>
Please note that the mechanism to temporarily disable delivery of Windows XP
SP2 will be available for a period of 120 days (4 months) from August 16. At
the end of this period, Windows XP SP2 will be delivered to all Windows XP and
Windows XP Service Pack 1-based systems -- WU and AU will simply ignore the
presence of the blocking mechanism.
