Blocked Startup Programs puzzle

I have Vista Home Premium.
Recently I had a problem where on startup the computer stopped with the
screen blank just at the point where I expected the logon screen to pop up.

It refused to accept my rescue disk although it would start with Safe Mode.
I tried my Acronis "bootable media" disk and managed to start it.

After this I noticed that Zone Alarm reported every access so I assume my
data for that was lost. It was no trouble to rebuild it though.
I have Spybot SD resident, and AVG (Free). I also update spyware Blaster
although I have no idea if this works.
Windows Firewall is turned off.

There have been no reports before or since of virus,malware, or dangerous
spyware.
My problem is that Windows Defender now persists in reporting Blocked
Startup programs. When I ask to see them they are all ok, but time is being
taken to move them from the checking stage to permitted, apart from the
usual
Zone Alarm and AVG which are not acceptable. I had this problem early on,
which somehow disappeared, I dont remember why.
Now it's back, all I could do was to tell Defender not to start which it
still does, and finally to block it partially with Zone Alarm.

I have read a few reports via Google, which dont seem to get anywhere.

Use the "Run" command and in the box type msconfig then click OK. In
msconfig click the startup tab. Anything in the list with a check next to it
will run on startup and anything without the check will not. This is the
complete list of startup items, unlike what you're getting from windows
defender.
