See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941
You may receive an "Error 0x80072EE2," "Error 0x80072EE7," "Error
0x80072EFD," "Error 0x80072F76," or "Error 0x80072F78" error message when
you try to use the Windows Update Web site or the Microsoft Update Web site

In addition to ensuring that your bits and autoupdate svcs are enabled, and
your date and time is accurate, you may need to take additional action. Open
Notepad and copy and paste the following dll lines. Afterwards save the file
as: Windows Update Reset.bat Afterwards again, double click on the file.
Afterwards again, try the update site again :

regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 wuapi.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll
regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll
regsvr32 wucltui.dll
regsvr32 wups.dll
regsvr32 wups2.dll
regsvr32 wuweb.dll

Thanks for the help,
tomorrow I'll try everything.

Wow it's incredible how such a defect has been release by MS.

It's the worst one I remember of.

It's your Windows installation that is defective, not the MS update.

mhhhh... I doubt that.

Everything was fine till 3 weeks ago update. (and I haven't updated anything
else)
After that everything got crazy!

All checks from MS report that installation is "fine" and "genuine".... but
it does not work

I'll keep on working.

P.S.
and the installation is a new pc from IBM

Hello,

I have the same problem on my Windows 2000 PC.

And it seems to be the MS update which will defective my installation.

After installing an older setup of IE6 I could reach the Windows Update
without any problems.

Now I selected all proposed updates and let them install.

The result was that I got the Error code 0x80072F78 again. :-((

Now I installed the old IE6 again and selects every proposed update one by
one.

Every update works fine but after installing the "Cumulative Update for
Internet Explorer for Windows XP Service Pack 2 (KB916281)" I get the error
code again on next log on to windows update.

Bye
Joerg

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem as Joerg (Error 0x80072F78 after I have
installed update KB916281) and I am 100% sure that my Windows 2000 Server
works fine.
Also I tried to uninstall update KB916281 and after that Windows Update
works fine. I installed the update again and I got Error 0x80072F78 again.

If anybody knows solution, please help.
