Dear MS Update Tech Support,
Yesterday I installed the latest patches recommended by MS Update and CERT.
Once installed, my computer -- for the first time -- has been blue screening
or freezing every 15-30 minutes.
I'm running Windows 2000 with all patches current, on an IBM A20m.
The only time I've escaped crashing is with my WiFi card plugged in, and
connected to the local university network. That was once, yesterday, and I'm
not sure I'll have the same luck again.
More specifics: When I powred up yesterday (perhaps out of Hibernate, but
maybe from a cold startup), my network card wasn't in, but I had an Update
message waiting for me, telling me that I had an update ready to install.
This apparently was the recent update that said it would scan once for a
piece of malware. (Could this patch have failed to perform correctly because
of the power-down in-between download and installation?) Shortly thereafter,
I got another Update message asking me to install another update. (That is to
say, the last one.) It appears to have installed correctly, but toward the
end of the install I accidentally pressed cancel, with apparently no
consequence to the installation. (I checked MS Update, and it said all
patches are installed.)
That's all the info I can give you -- the exact patch causing problems is
still a mystery.
Do you have an email address where I can write back with follow-ups?
Do I need to uninstall the patches and reinstall?
If this is at a point where I need to do a clean Windows 2000 reinstall, how
do I backup the HD data without blue-screening in the middle of the process?
I am traveling and my replies will be intermittent over the weekend, but a
prompt reply is vitally important.
Appreciatively,
MS
