Bob,
Thanks for the suggestions. The updates were not listed under Add/Remove
programs, so I couldn't undo them. I also could not get Windows Update to
work at all in Safe Mode.
I finally got things working by do a System Restore to last week. I tried
this several times before it mysteriously "took."
