Blue Screen of Death after Microsoft Update

I have a HP Pavilion DV5030US laptop running XP Media SP2.

Yesterday after getting it connected to broadband, I decided to catch up
with Microsoft Updates. I ran a series of update cycles; Windows Update to
Microsoft Update, Required Software Updates, Optional Software Updates, and
deferring any hardware driver updates. After all of the OS and other
software updates were done, I took an explicit System Restore Checkpoint
prior to attempting the hardware driver updates that Microsoft Update said I
needed. After applying the hardware updates and rebooting, I got a pop-up
saying that the Microsoft Wireless Manager could not support the built-in
wireless card. So I did a system restore to before the hardware driver
update. Windows got a blue screen of death upon reboot. I tried rebooting
into the last good configuration. I went into safe mode and tried repeated
restores to earlier and earlier restore points, until finally Windows lost
track and couldn't find the restore points any longer. I tried using the HP
Recovery DVD and reloaded the original device drivers, but that didn't made
any difference either.

I can boot into Safe Mode, and Safe Mode with Networking, but it will not
boot into normal mode without getting the blue screen of death.

PLEASE. Can anyone tell me how to recover from this while saving my user
data files?

Hello Michal,

Did you see any error message in the blue screen that might help to pin
point your problem.

Also I noticed you have a turion 64 cpu if you went from sp1 to sp2 that
might be a slight (fixable) problem it is not clear to me from where you
started sp1 or sp2.

Best regards,

The blue screen of death disappears immediatlly and reboots. Even if I saw
it, I have no idea how to diagnose the blue screen of death error message.

I can boot into safe mode, and safe mode with networking, but I can't find a
log showing what drivers were updated.

I believe you have automaticly restart system when a system faillure occurs
still active a standard not clever win xp setting.

You can change this by right clicking my computer, choose properties than in
system properties choose the tab advanced than choose startup and recovery
settings and than remove the v under system faillure at the still marked
item automaticly restart.

Now if you get the blue screen your computer will not reboot and you will be
able to see the error message which you can post here so that I or someone
else might be able to help you further.

By the way before the error occured did you upgrade from Sp1 to Sp2 or just
installed some Sp2 updates on the OS with Sp2 already installed?

It was set to NOT automatically reboot, but it does anyway.

The laptop came with XP Media SP2 preinstalled.

I would suggest you check the event log and see if you can find the problem
there, if not it might be best if you post the log file here as attachement.

Event Logs
Event logs are another important troubleshooting aid. To save event logs: 1.
Click Start, point to Programs, click Administrative Tools, and then click
Event Viewer.
2. Click Log, click the log type (the options are System, Security, or
Application), click Log, and then click Save As.
3. Click the location to which you want to save the file, and give the
file a name with an .evt extension
