How do I find msconfig/startup on my computer to disable KB891711.EXE. ?
Everytime since windows put this update in, I have trouble starting. Dr.
Watson on my computer says that this update has altered system files. He says
the module name is Kb891911.EXE , the discription: Windows KB 891711
component ,version:4.10.2222, Product:Microsoft (R) Windows(R) Operating
System, Manufacturer: Microsoft Corporation. I read somewhere that a
person can disable it so it won't do give me trouble starting. Would this be
the right thing to do?

Rubee, check here
Windows 98 and Millennium (ME) automatically load programs when
you boot your computer. These programs, which run in the background, will
often cause problems. To see a list of programs that are running hold down
the [Ctrl] and [Alt] keys on your keyboard and hit the [Delete] key once.
You can [End Task] on all of these programs except Systray and Explorer and
see if the system performance improves. Please be aware that all of these
programs will reload the next time you start your computer unless you make
some changes to your Startup folder. This is easily done with the Microsoft
System Configuration Utility (MSCONFIG).

To troubleshoot Windows using MSCONFIG:

1. Click [Start]| Run and type MSCONFIG then click [OK].
2. On the General tab, click Selective Startup and remove the check marks
from all of the boxes below. Note: Some items under Selective Startup may be
grayed out so that you cannot select them. This indicates that the
corresponding files do not exist.
3. Click [OK] and then click [Yes] to reboot.
4. If the system reboots normally and the problem you were troubleshooting
has been resolved you know that one of these items was the cause.
5. Put a check mark back into the check boxes one at a time and reboot. When
the problem recurs you have found the source of your trouble.

Thank you for all the suggestions. I won't be able to try your fix for a few
days, but as soon as I do I will let you know the results.

Hi was reading this and have had the same problem with that particular update
as well, nothing on my computer had been changed or modified in anyway save
for the update, about a month ago this same update was disabled by me through
the msconfig tool because it caused my computer to hang half way through load
up, everything was good til a day or so ago the same update presents itself
on auto update I click install restart and it hung again, went back to ms
config viola its the same update I had to disable last time, can't get it to
work, everything else on computer works fine without it, it apparetnly
doesn't work well with the other programs in my start up folder but they are
the very basics, just system tray and what it absolutely takes to run windows
and anti virus and firewall, it hangs right before those programs load,
always display and sound load and then its supposed to be AVG and Zone Alarm,
but it just hangs, not sure what I should do about it though, if I could save
the update to file then I could go offline and uninstall the antivirus and
firewall and then install update and then reinstall antivirus and firewall,
or maybe I should try to get the download in safe mode? you can go on the net
in safe mode, any help would be appreciated but I already know how to use the
msconfig tool, have been able to keep my machine in good running order for
some time now because of my understanding of it, but this update won't play
nice so I'm stumped,

I tried your answer, and unchecked all the check marks. When I tried to
reboot, it wouldn't until I finally must have hit the right combination of F
keys before it would let me exit. I put all the checkmarks back in but left
the selective on and went into one of the top panel tabs to nose around. I
found the KB891711 in one of the lists. I either unchecked or clicked on it,
I don't remember, but found where it said to disable it. I did. I left the
selective on and rebooted and LO and BEHOLD , it worked (at least so far ).
Everything came up right when I came on this morning. It might have been a
startup box as now a box comes up that says that I am using selective for
startup. I just X it and it goes away. I could check the box on it that says
, don't show this message again, but it will remind me of what I did in case
I have more problems. I didn't have to go through each step of adding back
one at a time, just got rid of that KB thing. Thanks for your help, it
steared me in the right direction. Hope this helps someone else too.
