Greetings,
When you start Messenger, it enumerates through a number of your devices (webcams,
soundcards -- like Moo's problem). However, each version of Messenger does it differently
and you're not the first to experience this problem in 8.x. This is a problem with the
driver of a particular device though, not Messenger itself (or rather more likely the
Audio/Video portion of Messenger).
As a possible quick fix, if you have a webcam, pull it out and see if that is the culprit.
