I have an Alienware M15x and am very cautious about installing anythin
on my computer. After some recent browser trouble I installed all th
vista updates I could find. problem solved. This switched on th
automatic updater so today when I logged on I received a message sayin
there was an update available so I decided I would get this last on
before I switched it off. It downloaded installed and then shut down
Now I can't restart the computer at all. No safe modes work all I get i
the blue screen with error message 0000000007E. I have tried a couple o
recovery disks One wants to re-install windows and the other wants t
restore the original factory setup. Please help I don't want to spen
the next two weeks of my spare time re-installing everything

P.S Of all the things to destroy my computer I didn't think it would b
microsofts own update :cry

Thank
Maz

You may have experienced a co-incident hardware failure: hard drive, power
supply.
Can you enter the BIOS? Do you see all your devices/drives? Is the time
correct?
If you cannot see the C drive you have your sad answer.
Since you can boot from a CD:
I would go repair console and use the DOS prompt, if you understand how to
do that, to see if you can read your hard drives.
If you can then run scandisk and see if any fixable problems come up.
If you understand DOS commands you should be able to copy files to a second
hard drive or a new file on the hard drive that should be immune to an OS
reinstall as long as you do not reformat.
OR: go to the install VISTA sequence and see if your current installation is
recognized and fixable.
If your installation is not recognized make sure you have backed up all the
files/documents etc before you reinstall Vista or you may lose them all.

Unfortunately my post here didn't help due to the fact I never got a
response, however I did manage to solve the problem. When I bought my
Alienware computer a number of CD's were included, some had drivers
another had an install CD none of which were useful. So i had a friend
download a REPAIR disk from the net. After changing my boot drive to my
CD drive I then booted from the disk. When it loaded up I had two
choices INSTALL or REPAIR I chose repair. The first attempt found a
problem then rebooted and continued to crash. The second time I booted
from CD it found a problem and again continued to crash. The third time
I booted from the CD I was asked if I wanted to restore to a previously
saved point when my computer was working, I clicked yes. It took 15-30
mins for the repair screen to complete then my computer booted up. When
I logged in it took 5-10 mins for my computer to get its bearings but so
far has worked fine. Hope this Helps others.

Glad you had a friend to help you out with the CD.
Think about possibly using back up program to second hard drive. Ye
there are some free ones out there. Do a search on Cnet. If the "C" Mai
crashes just swap with the backed up one. Just like spyware/adware, an
defrag programs get in the habit of running it regulary. Somewher
sometime you will be glad you did
