Bluescreen on log in, or stopped services

I am having serious trouble starting up Vista Ultimate 64 bit
It has been solid as a rock for 6 months but all of a sudden started playing
up.
Gets through to login screen no problem.
But when I login. it seems OK for a few seconds as the desktop and startup
programs open up.
Then it either bluescreens (with various seeminglty random titles) or
messages (several in some cases) saying that (again seemingly completely
random) a service has stopped and windows is checking for a solution.
Some of these (depending on what the service is) still allows Vista to
continue, others are so drastic that the interface appearance and useability
are seriously compromised, and some crash completely resulting in yet
another bluescreen.
I have uninstalled two recent programs (just to check) and System Restored
as far back as I can to get to an uncorrupted setup.
(No hardware changes, so its not that)
Still makes no difference.
Now... If I sit at the login screen for a couple of minutes before logging
in I have a much better chance of getting through unscathed (not necessarily
but its much better) especially after a restart rather than a cold start
(maybe thats significant)
Also, once I have gotten to a normal system (no bluescreen, no stopped
services) it is rock solid again.
Now I know the obvious thing is to check whats loaded at startup, so I did.
I have added nothing recently, and checking anyway I can't see anything
different to what it was before and should be OK.
If I have random corruption I can't go further back to eradicate it. (or can
I ? How do you get to older restore points that aren't shown normally?)

If anybody has had similar and solved it I would appreciative of any hints.

What firewall, anti-virus application or security suite is installed? There
are some that cause problems which do not appear immediately.
