I have been running Bookshelf through several versions of O/S on my system
from Windowns,95, 98, ME, XP, and Vista. In each case I purchased the new
O/S when it came out and installed it on my computer. The latest was in
Feburuary, when I purchased Windows Vista Home Premium (full system not
update) and installed it on my computer. Bookshelf 95 ran correctly on this
system using Windows Vista Home Premium. Recently, I had problems with the
boot disk (C:\) on my computer and had to by a new computer. I successfully
reinstalled all my software and transferred all my settings and data to my
new computer using Windows Vista Easy Transfer. Everything worked fine
(which I consider a small Miracle) including Bookshelf 95 which ran on the
new computer. One difference was noted, when I ran the software, it would
not play the .wav (AUDIO) files that accompany the dictionary and other
books in Bookshelf. Oddly enough, these filed played on the old computer
that was running Windows Vista Home Premium. I realized that Bookshelf 95 is
an old program, but I have ran it for years and I love it, and I can find no
real replacement for it. I have office 2007 installed on my computer and to
the best of my knowledge it does not include anything similiar. (My Office
2007 Version includes Outlook/Word/Excel/Power Point/Publisher which I added
to the standard version. None of these are OEM programs. I can play the
..wav files in the BOOKs (C:\BOOKS) folder with my windows vista media player,
but the Bookshelf 95 program at C:\Program Files\AAMSTP32\APP32\BS9532.exe
will not access the audio files in C:\BOOKS and play them on my new computer.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THE PROGRAM DOES WORK CORRECTLY IN ALL ITS OTHER ASPECTS
INCLUDING VIDEO TYPE FILES IN "THE YEAR IN REVIEW" AND OTHER PARTS OF THE
PROGRAM. Please note that all other aspects of the audio features of my
system work correctly and my audio is excellent. I researched all the items
in the knowledge base on Bookshelf 95 audio and the only references I found
suggested changes to the win.ini file which I tried, but did not work.
(Strangely I found one win.ini file on my computer as follows:

[fonts]
[extensions]
[mci extensions]
wav=MPEGaudio
[files]
[Mail]
MAPI=1
CMCDLLNAME32=mapi32.dll
CMC=1
MAPIX=1
MAPIXVER=1.0.0.1
OLEMessaging=1
[MCI Extensions.BAK]
m2v=MPEGVideo
mod=MPEGVideo
[Bookshelf]
APP=C:\PROGRA~1\AAMSTP32\APP32\BS9532.EXE

All of this is by way of saying I wonder if anyone has any information that
will help me with this problem? I know it seems archaic, but I love this
program and use it daily and would like to continue to run it, especially
since it ran correctly on my old computer in Windows Vista Home Premium.

If not can anyone suggest a new version of Bookshelf 95 that includes the
same books and a pronouncing dictionary.

Thank You

Well... if it ran fine on a Vista box before... and now it doesn't... do you
still have the CD for BS95? If so, you might want to uninstall the current
install and try a clean install. (If you do have the original CD, I'd
recommend running some disk surface scan utility prior to blowing away the
current install to check that the CD is still in good shape. Or just try
copying the CD to the local hard disk... if the OS has problems copying the
CD, then, most likely, the CD is hosed. If it does successfully copy, you
can try running the install from the hard drive instead of from the CD. May
not work... but -shouldn't- hurt to try.)

If you don't have the original CD... you can try running the Compatibility
Wizard... open Help and Support, type "compatibility wizard" in the search
box, click on the "start the compatibility wizard" link and have at it.

Good luck,

Lang

I like Bookshelf95 too and will maybe try it later on Vista and see what's
up. Do you know if you copy all the files to the HDD and then run the setup
from there you don't need to put the cd in the drive every time you want to
use Bookshelf? You just need to change the shortcuts path after to point to
the location on the HDD. I can do the same with the old Cinemania. Cinemania
is another one I wish Microsoft had kept up to date. Guess there wasn't
enough money in it for them.

Thanks for the response. I do have the original disks, in fact the program
was installed on the new computer from those disks which are in excellent
condition having only been used once before. I then copied the files from
the disk to my hard drive as instructed in an earlier MS tech note to the
Hard drive C:\ so that I could run it without having to insert the Bookshelf
disk every time. When I ran the program, it called for the location of the
disk, and I enterd C:\ BOOKS and it successfully accessed the file and ran
the program except for the audio as I indicated in my first post. I tried
all the compatibility modes, from Windows 95 forward and none made any
difference. I will uninstall it and reinstall it again and see if that makes
any difference. Thanks for the suggestion, I will respond later after I have
tried your suggestion.

I uninstalled and reinstalled the program, it did not change the conditions.
The system will still not play the audio files. I have exhausted the limits
of my understanding of how Vista plays audlio files with on board audio on
the new computer. I guess I need to follow that for a while.

Sigh... well, guess you're hosed when it comes to audio and BS95. On -that-
PC. Because, if you had it working before on a Vista box, and if memory
serves, you did, then one must assume that there's something on this "new"
box that doesn't like BS95.

At this point, the only thing I can think of that -might- get BS95's audio
back would be trying to run it in a VM running another OS. That's, no doubt,
a major hassle, though.

Maybe... last thought on this... maybe there's a setting for the audio card,
whether on-board or stand-alone, that impacts BS95. Go in and root around in
your audio card settings and see if there's any check-box or radio button
that might set BS95 "free." Because if Vista ran it with audio before, it
should run it with audio now. The only difference is hardware, so maybe
there's a hw setting that will get the audio working again.

Good luck!

Lang
