Boot Failure After SP2

So this is a strange one...

Ran the install on my tabletPC... no hitch, works great

Ran the install on my desktop... runs through install
procedure fine; gives no errors. After completion it
reboots, gets to copyright/flash screen and hangs
indefinitely with the little blue bar frozen.

So I try to boot into safe mode- no dice, starts loading
drivers then halts.

Okay, time to revert, boot into recovery console run sp2
uninstall as per Microsoft KB article. Seems to run
fine. Computer still won't boot.

Format and reinstall. Get all my drivers and such in
order; fully patch through SP1. Run SP2 install... same
behavior.

Format and reinstall. Don't load any drivers. run SP2
from same media that the tabletPC was run. Same behavior.

I'm at a loss. The machine is a P4 3.2 on an Abit IC7-
max3 with 2g ram, an SATA raid array on the onboard SiI
3114 controller, video card is an Ati 9800XT and there's
an audigy 2 installed. anyone have any ideas?

Greg;
This seems like a hardware issue since you have formatted twice.
Check with the Tablet manufacturer.
Also you could ask the Tablet PC newsgroup:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsof...ndows.tabletpc

See if you can boot with Base Video (e.g. VGA mode.)

If you don't have that as an option in your boot menu
see if you can use the bootcfg tool from the recovery console
to make an entry which does allow you to do that.

Most help for the tool seems to be available at the command-line.
E.g. bootcfg /addsw /?

BTW this is not be the best newsgroup to do followup diagnoses from
so I am cross-posting my reply in one of the windowsxp newsgroups
(which I don't subscribe to.) FWIW Google Groups shows that there
are similar incidents being discussed but none so far which take this
specific approach (unless the /rebuild switch does this for you by
default.)

(Google Groups search for
sp2 OR xpsp2 video bootcfg MVP group:microsoft.*.windowsxp
)

Hmm... something is peculiar here. The bootcfg documented
in my command-line via bootcfg /? seems completely different
from the one documented in XP's Help and Support Center (Win-F1),
which is probably the one that is being referred to when the /rebuild
choice is suggested. Perhaps there is a different command which
is only available with the Recovery Console?

Good luck
