Installed KB905915 & KB908519 on a Windows 98SE Gateway PII system.
Machine booted up fine immediately before installing these two updates.
After installing them, the boot record seems damaged.
The machine now gets the following error after turning it on:
Boot failure insert boot diskette in A:
The hard drive is about a year old. I still have the old hard drive,
which was a slow drive and replaced (but worked fine). The machine
still boots fine with the old drive, but produces that error with the
new drive.
I can't even boot in Safe Mode to uninstall the updates.
Any ideas? I need to install updates on other machines, but i'm
hesitant to update the others until I get to the bottom of this. This
machine was running an up-to-date Anti-Virus program & Anti-Spyware. I
don't suspect a virus could have done this, and i've heard about a new
one going around that could damage the boot sector. The drive booted
up fine yesterday, and I saw no evidence of anything lurking on the
machine.
Any ideas?
