Boot problem

Hallo NG,

I have a big problem with my Windows Vista Ultimate installation:
In my PC I have 2 Sata HD units in the first one (at the time I installed
Vista) there was a
Windows Xp working installation. Vista have been installed on the second
unit but after
several time I discovered that the actual boot have been installed on the
first disk MBR
(that with Windows Xp).
Now I had to remove the first disk unit and obviously this will prevent
Vista to start.
How can I handle that? There's a way to 'rebuild' the Vista boot?

Hi,

Indeed yes, the boot files would still be installed to the [system] drive or
active partition, regardless of where the actual operating system files are
installed (oddly enough termed to be the [boot] volume).

What you would need to do after removing the primary drive is boot with the
Vista disk and run a startup repair.

The same solution should apply also to Windows 7 installation?

Essentially yes, though the way Win7 sets up the boot is different.
