Most problems can be fixed without reinstalling the OS, which is the
only reason you'd need the Vista DVD. If you do wish to wipe out your
hard drive and re-install the OS, simply follow the Recovery/Restoration
instructions that came with the computer. (All legitimately licensed
OEMs are contractually obligated to provide a means of restoring their
computers to the original, ex-factory state.)

For less drastic remedies, you could either contact the computer
manufacturer's technical support for assistance, or post your problem(s)
here or on other support newsgroups to seek advice.

For people who only have a restore image - Windows Vista Recovery Disc
Download:
http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/window...disc-download/

You must burn the .iso as an image, not as data, using third-party burning
software such as the free ImgBurn.

IMHO, Microsoft should insist that manufacturers provide a disc no charge to
the customer. It's a bugger when trying to fix / recover / or reinstall when
the customer says "It didn't come with a disc". Usually that means the
Product Key on the back won't work with a generic copy of Windows and on and
on. I don't think it is fair, quite frankly, both to the customer and
anyone providing them with support.

Did you use 'Disk Manager' to check if there is a recovery partition on the
harddrive?

Otherwise, you will have to depend on know-how, System Restore, and backups
and disk images you've made and so on. You could borrow a copy of Windows
from someone if you know anyone willing to lend. You could even buy the
cheapest retail upgrade copy (Windows Vista Home Basic Upgrd.) if it is
really important to you - it will have all the files for all the versions
even though the disc is labeled 'Basic'.

If you are willing to wait, you could blow 49 bucks for the Windows 7
Upgrade:

[Pre-order Windows 7: Find participating online retailers in the US]
http://community.winsupersite.com/bl...in-the-us.aspx

They are selling Windows 7 Upgrades at steep discount right now, you might
take advantage of it. If you are not from the USA you might still be able to
get it .. I used Amazon.ca to buy the Professional Upgrd at 1/2 price in
Cdn. dollars.

They can't because they are not the ones selling systems (though I won't be
surprised if they will someday ), and in this case, Windows is no
different than a motherboard, CPU, or DVD-ROM used in a system - a
component, though an OS or a CPU would be characterized as a "critical
component" but they are, nevertheless, still a component of a complete
system.

There are system providers do provide OS discs (not a factory recovery disc)
and it's totally up to each system provider to determine what to offer and
if it's free.

If they (Microsoft) wish to, they can provide "free" download and let users
use their own product keys
