bootsect.bak

To restore Vista MBR after installing w2k one need to run bootsect.exe which
is said to reside on Vista installation DVD. My HP Pavilion computer arrived
with pre-installed Vista and with no installation DVD, just a recover
partition with no bootsect.exe.
However there is bootsect.bak on C drive (8K)
Is it a back up for bootsect.exe and can I run it for the above purpose?

No and no. Bootsect.bak is a copy of the old boot sector that is saved
to a file when Vista is installed. It's equivalent to bootsect.dos
that is created when Windows 2000/XP is installed.
