Hello people,

I need some help.

The machine I got complains about some of the hotfixes after
uninstalling IE7.

C:\> qfecheck | find "reinst"
KB923689: This hotfix should be reinstalled.
KB929969: This hotfix should be reinstalled.
KB925486: This hotfix should be reinstalled.
KB929969: This hotfix should be reinstalled.

The problem is, the uninstall files for the hotfixes have been deleted
from the Windows directory, so I do not know how to uninstall them.

I tried downloading the updates manually and running them (with and
without the /o switch) without any effect.

The log files show several failures. I will post them if it will
help.

Please advise.

Thank you,
Alex.

Do we actually believe qfecheck when it says "This hotfix should be
reinstalled"?

Especially when MBSA raises no concerns?

Believe it or not, it causes issues.

For example, the automatic update keeps trying (and failing) to
install the KB925486 hotfix.

Then why not focus on diagnosing and fixing that one?

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms06-055.mspx

Since IE7 is mentioned should we infer the OS is XPsp2? ; }
Then you only have one .dll to look at. Is vgx.dll getting updated?
If not that explains your problem symptom.

Hmm... that .dll is in both the %ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer
and the %SystemRoot%\System32\dllcache directories on my system.
Are both copies the same version? Is your %ProgramFiles% on the same
drive? Etc.

Have you tried doing a manual install instead? If you do that you can request
verbose logging if necessary. Alternatively supplement the logging by using
ProcMon.

Good luck

OK, let's concentrate on this one. Although I suspect that the other
updates have something to do with it since some of them also update
vgx.dll (specifically KB929969)

MBSA also complainsabout it:

After manually updating, I got two different copies on my system:

MBSA is asking for 929969, not 925486. 925486 is now superseded by 929969,
so there is no point in trying to install 925486. Indeed, it would be
positively wrong to force 925486 to load when 929969 has been installed.

That's looks odd. You have the 925486 version in service (18/9/06 851968
bytes) in the VGX folder, and the 929969 version (19/12/06 852480 bytes) in
dllcache. I would expect Windows File Protection to want to do something
about that in due course. The other instances are all as to be expected,
apart from the absence of the uninstall folders, which appear to have been
deleted. That might be why the PC is now in a strange condition, because
when you uninstalled IE7, the system should have used the uninstall folders
for all the IE7-specific patches to remove them in a logical and controlled
order from the system, and re-instating the previous patch levels. I guess
this is one of the reasons why it is not a good idea to delete the hidden
uninstall folders: you never know when they might be needed again.

I suggest that you just stop worrying about 925486, and concentrate on
getting 929969 in service, as MBSA advises.

I tried reinstalling KB929969 manually.
After rebooting, it still did not take:

H:\> qfecheck | find "rein"
KB923689: This hotfix should be reinstalled.
KB929969: This hotfix should be reinstalled.

and the "Automatic Updates" keeps nagging me about KB925486.

I've trimmed your logs etc for brevity. The log looked like a successful
installation, and indeed the 929969 versions of the file are now installed.
925486 should not be asking to instal, as the 929969 version is more recent.

Something is confused in your system, and I'm not certain quite what. So
here are some ideas of the "grasping at straws" variety.

- use control panel "Add or Remove Programs" to uninstall updates 923689,
925486, 929969 if they are listed.
- use qfecheck to see whether it is happy now.
- manually install 923689 and 929969 (making sure you have the correct
version of those updates for your present system).
- see if that fixes it with Windows Update, MBSA, and qfecheck.

Please also check to see whether there are any hidden directories under
C:\WINDOWS\ie7updates

Do you still have IE7 installed? Did you pick the right download?

See what I mean about the verbose log? Ambiguous or what?
Let's say the first line represents a test (e.g. a question.)
Then the second line would be saying that you still have IE7...
So why the h- don't they show the actual version
of the iexplore.exe that they are testing?!

The rest of the log shows that a target directory was:
c:\windows\$hf_mig$\KB929969

FWIW that isn't where mine is. It's in:
%windir%\ie7updates\KB929969\

I suspect that that difference would be consistent with
installing the XPsp2-only version instead of the IE7 version.

That's still the XPsp2-only version, not the IE7 version.

I hope the answer is that you picked the wrong version
and that it still tests for the IE7 case. E.g. perhaps that case
(installing the XPsp2-only version into a system which had IE7 installed)
would be allowed for compatibility reasons?

However, I don't understand why you are getting so many more modules
to copy than just vgx.dll

E.g. the manifest for 929969 is the same as the other update
we were looking at earlier:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../MS07-004.mspx

FWIW I don't even have a PROOF directory, so perhaps you are getting
a customized update because of it? Who knows? <eg>

Good luck

Robert

Hello Robin and Robert,

Thank you for your replies.
I'll address your points below.

But it does...

I suspect the IE7 uninstall was not clean enough.

No can do. The uninstall folders for the updates were deleted.

Nope. Both qfecheck and MBSA complain.

Already tried that (of the XP/SP2 variety).

Nope.

None.

It is supposed to be uninstalled (can't see it in "Add/Remove")
so I used the XP/SP2 versions.

That's what I'm supposed to install.

As it should be.

If only it was as simple.

Perhaps IE7 did not uninstall completely and there are some leftovers
that confuse the update?
