Briefcase problems with Vista

I have used the Briefcase facility with a USB Dongle for many years to keep
a number of files synchronised between my home and office pcs. Never really
had any serious problems doing this.

Just upgraded to a Vista machine at home and the Briefcase facility is
throwing some wobblies, occasional error messages etc (e.g. "some files have
sync copies that are inaccessible etc..."). Has anyone else had such
problems and if so what is the solution?

It's making me think that perhaps it's time to move on to a better utility -
hopefully freeware - for syncing such files. Can anyone recommend one that
works well please - or any other ideas to solve the problem. The Vista Sync
centre doesn't appear to work with USB Dongles.

Thanks,

V

Sorry... I don't have any experience whatsoever with Briefcase. The only
SWAG I can take on this is that maybe, just maybe, the delta's between XP's
version of NTFS and Vista's version of NTFS might have something to do with
this.

That's assuming, of course, that your office PC is running XP and it's
drive[s] are formatted NTFS.

That said, have you run chkdsk on both PC's?

Sorry, don't even have a SWAG on the Vista sync center not working with USB
dongles.

Victor, I too used briefcase for many years until a little over a year
ago when we first beta tested Vista. Briefcase simply would not function
correctly under Vista. I filed bug reports with every build for months
with no response.
Briefcase simply will not function correctly under Vista.
But, try syncing files using the sync center (control panel/sync center).

Thanks Frank. However, as my office pc is still XP, can I use the sync
centre at the vista (home) end?

I believe you need to download and install synctoy from MS.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...o/synctoy.mspx

Hi Victor,

I just jumped into this thread since I just had the same problem wit
my briefcase. You had stated

"some files have sync copies that are inaccessible etc..."

My error message was identicle. Here's what I did to resolve it. Righ
click the USB thumb drive you're trying to sync with. Go to the 5t
option down on the right click menu which is "share...

Click on Advanced Sharing then click Continue when Vista asks you t
acknowledge. Make sure there's a check in the "share this folder" box.

For some strange reason the sharing permission was changed on my thum
drive from the "share this folder" checkbox being checked originally t
then being un-checked. Strange. But that fixed it for me.

Once you've enable the sharing feature you may want to assign specifi
share permissions for yourself in the "permissions" utility about 2/3 o
the way down on the left of the "advanced sharing" window. I assigne
permissions specifically for "-my user name-" as well as th
"administrator"

Once you've done this you may need to unplug the drive and then plug i
back in

I hope it works for you as wel

Good luck

Rand
