BSOD during upgrade install

Around about the 55% mark of the Completing Installation stage I get a blue
screen of death and cannot get any further, safe mode will load but if I
attempt to load normally to continue the install I just get the same error
screen and have to reboot. This has happened twice, both times at the same
stage.

My specs are:

AMD AM2 Athlon 5200+
Asus Crosshair mobo (I haven't updated the drivers or BIOS for this since I
bought it)
2 Gb of GEIL RAM (GX22GB6400UDC dual channel kit)
2x 200GB Maxtor HDD
GeForce 8800 GTS (with the latest XP drivers)
Asus DRW-1814BLT

I've not been able to catch the exact error message but it was something like
"PAGE_INTO_NON_PAGED_AREA" and the more I read the more likely it seems to
me to be something to do with my out of date mobo drivers and BIOS.

Any constructive comments and/or advice is welcome.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know if you can upgrade from safe mode..
might be worth a try (no drivers loaded).

Definately I would uninstall sound driver,
also uninstall antivirus and anything else
in the systray should be disabled..mcafee/
norton/kaspersky should be uninstalled..
then reboot into VGA mode..try that.

the upgrade is buggy and if you can't get
it to run usually the fresh install works
fine...it will take old OS and mark it
as windows.old (including program files).

Then when system is running you can just
move any saved games or documents to the
fresh installers folders. Anyway..the
fresh install is usually less than half
an hour compared to 2-3 hours of a
struggling upgrade that will automatically
rollback without_prompting if a video
driver (and more) gets burped on. You
could try hunting the install.log but
it may not be complete if unit froze.

Follow NT Canuck's advice and also disconnect any peripheral devices
attached.
That error message is commonly related to RAM issues.

You really might want to try a clean install if the upgrade install
fails again.

Hi Hyweee,

What you need to do is to perform a clean install. For instructions, please
see my post 'Clean Install Windows Vista Using Upgrade Media' in the
newsgroup 'Windows Vista Installation and Setup'.

Thanks for the responses, after uninstalling my firewall and antivirus and
disconnecting a few USB devices I finally got past the 55% hump.

Thanks again for the advice.
