ASUS DSEB-.. and similar motherboards,
2 identical Intel Quad-Core Xeon E5420 / 2.5 GHz Prozessor installed giving
BSOD "MULTIPROCESSOR_NOT_SUPPORTED".

Does Windows Server 2008 actually not support 2 physical CPUs? NB: My
Windows Server 2008 is part of SBS 2008 Premium Package.

Thanks - Reinhard

is that 2 quad cores in one machine? which 2008 version is it, web,
standard, enterprise, datacenter??? web and standard only support 4
processors, i believe 2 quad cores would look like 8 processors which would
require enterprise or datacenter editions.

looked up sbs 2008 premium, looks like it includes 2008 standard, that would
only support 4 cores.

Up to 4 Sockets are supported in Web, Standard & Enterprise versions. SBS
2008 Standard Edition will take 4 Sockets as will the 2nd Server included as
part of Premium. The error you are seeing is the same as what i just saw on a
new Lenovo RD120 Server and Lenovo's Tech Support verified it was an issue
with different Stepping Levels between the two CPUs. It sounds like Lenovo
will be addressing the issue via new BIOS. One technician suggested swapping
CPU positions but that did not work for me.

Good Luck!

Just to make sure: When you are talking about sockets, do you mean physical
CPUs?

We are using Quad Core CPUs, ie. SBS 2008 is supposed to handle 2 Quad Core
CPUs if I understood you properly?

Thanks - Reinhard

Reinhard,

Here is some additional information:

This is the word from several MVPS, From NT4 on if you wanted to add a
second processor it must be EXACTLY the same PROCESSOR, same model and same
step, etc. or Windows would be upset.

So BIOS may be able to handle slight differences in step but you are much
better off finding two processors that are same model and same step.

Good Luck!
Tim

Tim,

we are using 2 absolutely *identical* CPUs.

Anyhow, I will check with the board manufacturer.

Thanks - Reinhard
