Automatic updates downloads the SP3 update to XP which goes nearly to end
(Registry update) but then stops with Blue Screen of Death
*** STOP : 0X0000008E (0XC0000005, 0X004E00L9, 0XAE87FBD0, 0X00000000)

After the machine is restarted the restore point takes over the the SP3 roll
back takes the machine back to its original state. Windows update (automatic
setting)then says that SP3 is available and cycle restarts. Windows updates
turned off as a result.

All other updates have been applied successfully and there is no obvious
match in KB files

Suggestions please.

Hello Ian,
Please read: Troubleshooting the Download Process

Try running chkdsk to check the Hard Drive for inconsistencies.
Then run a defrag:

Ian, this problem was driving me crazy for the last 3 days. I updated on the weekend and everytime I plug anything to any USB I BSOD. After trying to update drivers and removing drivers I finally removed Windows SP3 from the Add/Remove program list. Finally everything works the way it should now. I hope that sometime in the future that XP and Dell would get together to fix the issue in SP3.

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3), until 14 Apr-09. Chat and
e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/def...spx?gprid=1173 | select "Windows
XP" then select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"
