Hello all- Last night I got the "blue screen of death" on Vista Home
Premium. When this has happened in the past I would re-start with no
problems. This time however it seems as if it's unable to read my hard
drive...it just keeps rebooting once the HP screen shows up. It isn't
detecting an operating system for some reason. I wasn't running any
programs when this happened it just kind of did it on it's own. I do not
own a Vista DVD so I cannot do the "start-up" repair. Are there any
other options for me or does anyone know what the problem could be? I
don't want to get ripped off by a Computer Repair company so I would
love to know my options. Thank you so much. Jay

Well, you are gonna have take it back to HP if its still under warranty. Can
you boot into Safe Mode? If so, check the Event Viewer for any logged error
messages that might be related to hardware failure, this could probably give
a hint at whats causing the crash and help to diagnose the problem.

You can also check Problem Reports and Solution for any solutions that might
help resolve the problem.

It doesn't even recognize an operating system so I can't boot into saf
mode at all. BIOS isn't even able to run a hard drive test.. The har
drive is making wierd noises in the laptop..it sounds like it'
clicking..or not reading anything. Is it possible for the hard drive t
just go kaput like this?? It's an HP dv6000 series..no longer unde
warrenty unfortunately

Sounds like your HD has failed. If it is no longer under warranty you may
be screwed. It isn't that hard to replace the HD on a laptop yourself.
Check Newegg for lots of choices. Just be sure you know if your computer
has a PATA or SATA drive.

The OS is a different matter. You could check with HP to see if they have a
program for sending you a Vista disc at nominal cost, but I doubt it.

Laptops that don't come with a OS DVD often have a way of making one from
the files that are stored on a separate partition. I've told my son this,
but I don't think he's made a backup DVD yet. One day he will learn of the
importance of a backup DVD the hard way.

Sounds like a hard disk gone bad, you should take it back to HP and let them
fix it for if its still under warranty.

Well there is no warranty on this one and I'd rather not go through the
HP customer service process..I'd much rather take care of this myself.
This model requires a Sata drive. I found a 160 GB notebook hard drive
at Best Buy for $120.00. If I purchased this and installed the drive
itself- how easy is it to load the OS on it if the laptop didn't come
with a Vista disc? Someone mentioned the files being stored on a
seperate partition..does this mean that once the new drive is installed
it will automatically reinstall Vista??? If not- since I don't have a
Vista disc- I'm wondering if I could install XP on this machine even
though it came with Vista already installed. I have an XP disc at home-
not Vista and I REALLY don't want to have to purchase a new OS disc in
addition to a ne w HD. Than you EVERYONE for your help on this. It is
very much appreciated

I would suggest you check to see if the hard drive is fried, first. This
is relatively simple to do: boot a Linux Live CD and run 'badblocks' -
you'll know fairly soon.

So I just bought a new Hard Drive. Any tips on how to format it once I
plug it in? Any special prompts that I should know about here? Perhaps
another thread covers this?

It's certainly possible, and it's even more likely in a laptop than in
a desktop.

I can't tell from here for sure, but if it's making weird noises, my
guess is that the drive has failed.
