BSOD at Vista Boot

Normally I know enough about computers to fix the problems I creat
myself, but from time to time a problem springs up and I have no ide
how to fix it, or even what the problem actually is.

My laptop won't boot up Windows Vista. It blue screens about 5 second
into Vista loading up, then it retarts itself. The error code is..
"0x0000007b (0x80599bb0, 0xc0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)" Th
problem all started out of nowhere when I returned home from watching m
sisters kids. I had downloaded and update of some kind that seeme
perfectly innocuous, it installed, I shut my computer down and when
got home and tried to boot it up, that's what it told me, and has tol
me everytime time since. The Repair utillities that I can run won'
touch whatever the problem is. I've run system restore but it doesn'
do anything. And I thought I had backups made, but apparently th
backup utility won't even recognize them. I'd just re-install Windows
but Acer never gave me a re-install cd. Actually, it never came wit
any cd's. Apparently it's been put onto a Partition on the hard driv
that never gets deleted when you re-install. Only problem is, before
do re-install it (however I manage to do that) there's some prett
important crap I need off the C drive, and possibly the D drive.

Now, it's been lying around for a bout a month and I'm getting prett
sick of not being able to use it.

If anyone has any ideas or anything of use I am eternally grateful

Hi,

That's going to be a tough one with a disk to boot from. 0x7B, or
"inaccessible_boot_device", can have several causes. These would included a
corrupted system volume, hardware failure, virus, or bad device driver. In
most cases, loading to at least the boot menu where you can try the last
known good configuration. You'll need a disk to load the recovery
environment where you can try running the disk checker.

Remove the hard drive and connect it to another computer
using a usb-ide adaptor. They're about 20 bucks and available anywhere.
If you use a Linux machine it'll be easier because Linux is more forgiving
about damaged media and filesystems. Mount the drive and copy your data.

Now reinstall the drive in the laptop and use the factory
restore procedure.
