What is a "Buffer Overrun"? What causes it, and how can I get rid of it?

Hi,

Simply put, a buffer overrun occurs when a program attempts to store or
stack data that exceeds the limits of the designated storage area (buffer).
Easiest way to think of it is as an overflowing bucket of water under a
running faucet.

I have numerous video files in my Videos Folder. I seem to be getting them
when I open this folder in Explorer, and also when I open the Media Center
and select Videos, which I assume is looking in the same folder.

And how, when and where and in what form does the error show up?

It appears in a pop-up window. Normally it says the program cannot continue
due to the error, and it appears at various times. Most times, I can switch
to the program window (Explorer or Media Center) and continue, while the
error alerts continue to pop up periodically and pile up behind the program.
Usually, I can continue to work while the alerts stack up, but if I accept
the alert, the program shuts down, usually along with the taskbar and
everything else. Then the taskbar, etc. usually reappears after a few
minutes, sometimes minus a few icons.

Thanx:

Hi,

Move the video files out of that folder, one at a time. Retry opening the
folder or media player list inbetween until the problem stops. At this
point, the culprit will likely be the last file that you moved out of the
folder.

Is there further information for this error in the Problem Reports and
Solutions Center control panel?

It sounds like you have a broken third party codec on your system that is
handling memory poorly/unsafely.

What's the exact text of the error? If that was a buffer overrun alert from
Microsoft, I would think it would be showing up in the Problem Reports and
Solutions Center control panel. If it's a third party pop-up, they'd have
their own logging system. =\
