After spending almost a day on tracing down a problem I narrowed it down to
KB841873 and tried to inform MS using a previous address I had to inform
them out of courtesy, *not for help*. It bounced stating I should use their
new Web based E-mail message and paste my comments in it. Well I signed on
via the Passport method only to be dropped after listing that I have an OEM
version. This is not an issue for the OEM, they don't create Critical
Updates nor are they interested in fixing them. Here is what I was trying
to tell them:

"I run into a "funny" problem which after lots of work I narrowed down to a
"bug" in MS Critical Security update KB841873. The "bug" may of course
only be applicable to Windows 2000. Looks to me MS forgot to test the
update results under any other than an Administrator Account and never
noticed that under other accounts it creates problems.

My Scheduled Tasks (under my day-to-day account) suddenly showed a new
line - nothing under name and the rest changes from nothing to various info
each time I start it. Clicking on the "non-existing" name provides from lots
of binary info in the left pane and somtimes various names of Windows files
for the various categories, including creator. There is no way I can edit or
delete this. Sometimes it results in a fatal error but the Dr.Watson data is
way over my head.

However, this "new task" line does not show if signed on under my Admin
account!!!.

Not knowing where it came from I restored my June 27/04 drive image.
Scheduled Tasks was o.k. and I proceded to (again) make two updates to
sundry software and (now) 9 updates to Norton Internet Security 2004 and
(now) 8 Windows Critical updates. Later on checking - the problem was again
there.
I again restored my June 27 image and this time I proceded to install every
update one at a time rebooting each time whether required or not, and
checking Scheduled Tasks. No problems for the two sundry programme updates
nor any of the 9 NIS 2004 updates. I then proceded with windows updates
going basically by dates of the 8 KB's, installing KB840315, no problem,
KB842526, no problem, then KB841873.
After that reboot the problem showed up again. Checking Add/Remove Programs
it is listed but with a date of last used of 20/06/2004 ???? (there is no
other such KB listed under history.) Trying to uninstall I receive this
message "An error occurred while trying to remove Windows Hotfix KB841873.
It may have already been un-installed, etc.."

In the meantime I thought my work-around would be to once again to restore
my June 27 image and update all "but" KB841873.

However, I was saved from this as, yes, it can be un-installed - forgot to
sign on as administrator. DUH.

Hmmm, would it not have been nice if MS
a) provides the message that user trying to remove the chosen programme has
insuficient rights rather than the message given.
b) incorporates in the removal programme also the function to remove this
update info from the history file where it still shows as "sucessfully
installed".

I thought you might wish to know about this, test it and "fix the fix" No
reply is required.

Regards, Willi"
