Bug in explorer with /root

Probably not noticed until now because I doubt most people use it, but if you
run explorer with /root (ie. %windir%\explorer.exe /root,c:\whatever) right
click on the right side and try to create a new file or folder with the New
menu, nothing happens. The screen doesn't update. If you refresh with F5
you'll see that whatever you selected did in fact get created, you just don't
know it until you refresh and you don't get to set the name beforehand.
Everything works fine without /root.

Hi Greg,

I think you have uncovered a genuine bug - well done!

I tried this on XP - works fine, new file can be created. On Vista, "New"
does nothing, no new file, no new shortcut. But coming back to the same
directory later, I see that a "New text Document.txt" had been silently
created.

Unfortunately, I don't think Microsoft monitors this newsgroup very closely
(in fact, not at all) for bug reports. It seems the best path to submit a
bug report if via the Vista Feedback page:

If anyone has more direct avenues for submitting bug reports, let us know.

You know, I was looking for something like that but couldn't find it, just
the paid support options. Visual Studio has a nice public bug tracker but I
guess not Vista. I sent it to them from that page.

Hi Greg

I tested this and had the same problem you did. However if I use
"%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe C:\(whatever)" instead without "/root", I di
not have the refresh problem to see the "New Folder" created. It seem
like you, it does not like the /root
