BUG REPORT - E-Mail Inbox button doesn't use system default browse

Having been unable to find another place to file bug reports, I am posting
one on this forum. Your "customer suport" staff are, frankly, useless in
this field.

I am using Windows Live Messenger v8.1 on Windows XP. My default browser is
set to Mozilla Firefox.

When I right-click the Live icon in my system tray, and proceed to click the
E-mail Inbox button, the site launches in Internet Explorer, not in the
default browser. However, the "MSN Home Page" button opens in my default
browser, as expected.

I would like to see two things accomplished:

1) The Email Inbox button use my system default browser instead of forcing
IE upon me.

2) Microsoft to come up with a system to receive bug reports from the public.

Thank you.

Greetings,

This has already been rectified in 2009 beta. However, it will not automatically open
Hotmail, it simply sends you to the MSN Homepage and you have to sign in manually.

The reason for this is because Microsoft cannot guarantee, except through it's own browser,
that it can securely send your credentials to sign you into Hotmail.

Another option is to use Stuffplug (http://www.stuffplug.com) to automatically open the
Hotmail link in your default browser, although it can't automatically sign you in always
either.

Hi Jonathan

when using 2009 beta and IE as my default browser if I click on the email
button it just takes me to the MSN home page. Is this a known bug/feature? I
liked the easy access to email that the old messenger had.

I have firefox installed on the machine but the default browser is set to IE
and i've always used that to access email.

Strangely, I want it back how it was. My default browser is Opera and it
doesn't handle hotmail very well (it works, until you try to compose an
email!) so I want WLM to open hotmail in IE no matter what my default browser
is, is there some way to do this? (I'm on 2009 build 14.0.8050.1202)

Hi,

To the best of my knowledge so far there's no way to work around this in 2009, I have a few
thoughts about how it might be possible but I need to do some further research and testing.

I believe this could be filed under the "can't please everyone" department

"Can't please everyone" is not a valid excuse. This is just a mistake on MSN's end. None of the previous versions had the problem of having to log in again. When MSN used open hotmail in IE, that was not a problem. I use Firefox as my default but I had no problem using a IE to check my email instead. I do however, have a problem of having to log into MSN and then logging in again to check my email. I've used hotmail for about 10 years now and MSN for a little bit less. It was so convenient to log onto MSN and be able to see when I got mail and access my mail with the click of a button. Now that I have to log in twice, I find it a nuisance and a waste of time. TIME IS MONEY here.

I now do not log onto to MSN that often as I don't see a need to. If I need to speak to someone, I can simply phone them. It's faster and more direct. And after much hesitation, I've decided to LEAVE MY HOTMAIL ACCOUNT as there are much better email services out there. I only stuck with hotmail because it was conveniently linked to messenger.

Get it together or people will look somewhere else.
