are there any forums or anything where bug reports can be placed or is it
just here?

There's good ol' http://feedback.live.com, but it's pretty much a black hole if you ask me.

This is the place, but as you know from being here for ages, rarely is there any real action
taken.

Although I admit I like hearing about them and naturally you'll always get my comment .
That's about the best I can guarantee I'm afraid.

yeah thats what I wondered. the last thing I sent to feedback was things I
wanted to see either brought back or improved and those being the background
area. in 8.5 and 8.1 as well when a background was selected it would provice
a background for the whole window not just the part where you typed. that was
taken away in 9.

another feature that I particularly liked about 8.1 ant up don't remember if
it was on the earlier versions was the ability to place the messenger
shortcut on your desktop when installing messenger.

just minor things like that. but the problem with the contact list issue
definately needs fixing. don't know what it would take exactly but something
has gotten messed up somewhere....

The background thing was bugged over and over during the so-called "private beta" - long
before any of us had a copy, I'm pretty sure the background thing was decided. There's lots
of technical reasons (or at least, a reason why more effort wasn't put in) why it is the
lousy way it is now, but as most decisions go, I'm sure they looked at the usage data and
decided "no one" used backgrounds.

Like everyone new version of anything, the UI has changed in the leaked 2010 screenshots if
you haven't seen them, so maybe its been dealt with. I wouldn't bet on it though.

I think options like the "on desktop" thing disappeared when it went into the suite with the
other applications. I guess they didn't want to fill up the desktop with a ton of new
shortcuts (or bother with an interface to allow it one way or another).

I've not noticed any contact list issues directly lately in observation, but I haven't really
added anyone recently. I'll do some testing again from scratch sometime in the near future
when I get a minute.

that would explain why it looks as wierd as it does now thats for sure. I
would like to see screenshots of what they are doing with 2010 it would be
interesting. at least I think anyway. what would be even more interesting is
if they would get input from users on what "they" themselves actually want in
messenger. for instance I was never bothered by the tabs on messenger didn't
pay much attention to them and I doubt many other users did either. I did
like the background option though which I used all the time and it is nice to
have it look the way you want it to instead of having to use messenger plus
just to get a background to fill the whole window lol. and it is appearing
that the list thing is a known issue in 2009 (which could explain the problem
I have had with the window comming up that I had already added a yahoo
contact when I hadn't.)

Linkages here for you, some were down, so I figured the google link was good enough.

A lot of the "choices" (what UI looks like, what features are good or bad) come from
usability testing they do locally. But if you really want a feature in Messenger (or frankly
any piece of mainstream software written by a large corporation) you either become an
employee of the company in question or a member of the press.

It's not very pleasing, but that's the way it is nowadays.

Also, I used to use backgrounds too, although I admit I haven't done so in a long time.
Interestingly my mother was using it prior to the 2009 release and stopped because they
looked so bad. I expect other people have followed suit for the same reason. To be honest,
I wouldn't be surprised if the feature were missing in future releases.

thanks for the link. and from what I saw of the screenshots, it looks more
like it is aimed at other things rather than just messenger itself. and that
is what I was afraid of lol I wish they would listen more to what the people
that use it want though instead of just the testers themselves. and I did
too. I used backgrounds on 8.1 and 8.5 liked the feature really well.

I hear you, most of us feel the same way.

Unfortunately, marketing tends to drive Messenger development it seems.
