Bug in "Security Update for Windows XP (KB925902)"

After installation of the new Security Update for Windows XP (KB925902),
realeased 2007-04-03 I get the following error message after restart:

"RTHDCPL.EXE

The system DLL user user32.dll was relocated in memory.
The application will not run properly. The relocation occurred because the
DLL C:\WINDOWS\system32\HHCTL.OCX occupied
an address range reserved for Windows system DLLs.
The vendor suppling the DLL should be contacted for a new DLL."

The vendor to provide a new DLL should be Microsoft in this case, right?

When I un-install the Security update it is possible to start the computor
without the error message, but then Automatic update intalls the update and
start the nagging process to restart the computer.

Right now I must disable automatic updates from Windows Update until the DLL
works as expected.

Best Regards
Lars Karlsson

There is a post at GRC.com newsgroup that installing the new R1.64 version
High Definition Audio Codecs from
Realtek should fix the problem. No need for the hotfix as per the poster at
GRC.com.
If you prefer to not to upgrade to new version R1.64, install the hotfix
provided by Microsoft. You can get it at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
See KB article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935448/

Vulnerabilities in GDI Could Allow Remote Code Execution
(925902)http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sec.../ms07-017.mspx
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/925902
Known issues
After you install this security update on a Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)-based
computer, Realtek HD Audio Control Panel (Rthdcpl.exe) may not start. Additionally, you
receive an error message that is similar to the following:

Rthdcpl.exe - Illegal System DLL Relocation
The system DLL user32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly.
The relocation occurred because the DLL C:\Windows\System32\Hhctrl.ocx occupied an address
range reserved for Windows system DLLs. The vendor supplying the DLL should be contacted
for a new DLL.

Update for Windows XP (KB935448)
Install this update to resolve an issue where the Realtek HD Audio Control Panel may not
start after you install security update KB925902 (MS07-017) and security update KB928843
(MS07-008).

Donna,

Thanks for the post! Murphy was in fine form, as just after
installing the update, my DSL went out. Totally unrelated of course,
but a lot of head scratching resulted. Also, the Realtek upgrade
fixed a long standing incompatibility with an unrelated audio program.
Again, thanks for the posting!
