Greetings everyone,
Just passing on a bug I've encountered in Vista on user account maintenance.
It came to light as a result of installing a multiboot setup.
If anyone knows a more direct channel to get this bug report to Vista
developers, please let me know.
Recently I installed a multiboot setup of Server, x64 and x86. In moving to
this arrangement, I renamed my original administrator account names in these
installations in order to distinguish them better. Instead of UserName for
the two Vista installs, I chose UserName x64 and UserName x86, by going to
Control Panel -> Add User Accounts -> [click on existing account icon] ->
Change Account Name.
On reboot both into x64 and into x86, Vista could not find the user profiles
and loaded defaults.
Knowledge Base offered this article for repairing the paths for user profile
settings in the registry:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324734
On inspection of the registry entries, it turned out Vista had not bothered
to modify the account name provided at the original install of the OS; in
the registry, the path for the relevant user profile was still listed as
UserName, instead of being updated to UserName x64 and UserName x86.
Since updating the registry entries, the problem has not recurred for those
accounts.
I did not verify whether this bug exists in Server 2008. (In Server, I kept
the original administrative account name, never making modifications.)
Cheers!
