Bug in Windows Update?

I use XP Home - SP3. I set automatic updates to INFORM me if there
are any updates but "don't download and install them".

Yesterday at bootup there was an alert (in the tray at the bottom
right of the screen) that updates were available. I then went to
Windows Update and manually downloaded and installed one update
(KB967715). Today when I rebooted, there again was an alert (in the
tray) that updates were available. I then went to Windows Update and
found that one update was listed as available. It was the same one I
installed manually yesterday. I checked Windows Update history and it
indicated that the update in question was indeed installed! Windows
"Add or Remove Programs" also lists KB967715 as installed.

So the question is: Why do I still get the alert message that
"updates are available" every time I reboot and why does the WU site
still indicate that update KB967715 is needed - even though it lists
KB967715 as already installed? And how to I get rid of the erroneous
alert message?

Louise

I got the same thing on 3 computers. I went to windows update history and
saw that it was installed.
To not get the shield to pop it up again - the next time you see it- uncheck
the update. and close it- before it closes it will ask you to check a box
to never show you this update again- and put the check mark in. This should
stop this update from showing up again. I had to do this on 3 computers
running xp sp3

I did what you suggested when I first saw the shield. The shield goes
away but when you go to the WU site you get a message that "you have
hidden certain updates". If you show hidden updates, the update in
question reappears as a needed priority update - and the shield
reappears in the tray.

If you're certain that KB967715 installed:

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop
(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]
Open the Download folder and delete its contents
Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to
complete | Uncheck/deselect KB967715 and hide it ("Don't show me this update
again").

4. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]
Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start
(Starting the service will take a moment)

Windows Update History says KB967715 is installed. Windows add/remove
says its installed. But the shield alert keeps offering it for
install. So how can I KNOW if it is installed or not? Also, I was
browsing the windowsupdate.log file (at which I am no expert) which
indicates the install ended with error 0x80070bc2! I am getting more
confused.

Further Information: I clicked on the shield in my systems tray and
let it install kb967715 (again?). The install seemed to work as usual
and upon reboot the shield was not in the tray. HOWEVER, when I visit
the Windows Update site and select custom scan, WU indicates that I
still need to install kb967715. PLUS, WU History indicates kb967715
has been installed TWICE!

What is MORE, a new icon appeared in the sys tray. It is labeled
"JAVA (TM) 2 Platform". I realize this may not be related to my
Windows Update error - or is it? NOTE - after 2 or 3 minutes, the
java icon disappeared.

0x80070bc2 = ErrorControlRebootRequired

Your temporary workaround is to hide the patch and tell it to not show that
patch any longer.

The machine's still awaiting a reboot (as you've been prompted to do
repeatedly).

Do the four-step fix I posted.

The appearance of the Java icon in Notification Area (AKA systray) has
nothing to do with it (although the Sun Java auto-updater may have updated
your runtimes to v1.6.0_12 without you being aware of it).
