I recently ran the Windows update on a new install of Windows XP pro and I
have 43 assorted directories off of the root drive. They all have a
msxml4-kb927978-enu.log file in them.

Can I delete all of them since the MSXML finally did install?

It is a known issue that KB927978 generates randomly named folders on the
root drive. The folders contain the installation log file. They can be safely
deleted.
