c:\Config.msi problem

I have spent the last couple of days trying to install Adobe Photosho
CS4 on
a dual core Vista 64 system. I was receiving the dreaded message about
c:\config.msi not accessible. Search of the web revealed this occurs
regularly durnig various installs and many have "cures" revolvin
around
elevating priviledges, etc. I tried all the various suggestions an
kept
failing - at least 25 or 30 times.

My experience was that it hit randomly during the somewhat long instal

process of CS4. While some installs just keep going anyway, CS4 doe
not.
The config.msi folder stores rollback info during the install process
If no
rollback is required, I would assume that the files stored there are
unnecessary. Those installs that merely post the error and continu
seem to
be OK. CS4 won't do that.

I decided that whatever the bug was, it was a "race" condition of som
sort,
so I decided to slow my system down by running other things during the
install. Ultimately I had two videos and the Process Monitor utilit
going,
and the install finished successfully.

This is why the bug appears randomly across the universe - it i
dependent
on system speed and clearly exascerbated by multiprocessin
configurations.

I hope this is helpful to those of you who find this post by searchin
the
web, as I did

ok I had the same problem with lexware financial office with an update
via an **.msp*
and then I tried your tip with running some movies and that worked.

*Thanks a lot!*

Frustrating problem wasn't it! Race conditions are absolutely th
worst

I have 50 years of computer operating system experience and hav
learned a lot about problem isolation and workarounds. Working wit
computer systems is like scraping your knuckles restoring a classic car
Very, very frustrating along the way, but extremely satisfying when yo
produce the final product.

I posted my workaround in the hope that others like me would find i
and profit from it

I am glad that you did just that

Jac

You saved my day, and the least I could do is to show some appreciation.
:-) Additionally the lexware support is not the best, so I hope that
Google will show the next poor ba**ard who runs also that OS and has
difficulties updating what the answer might be *grin*
