After partially installing SP2 ( I say partial because the install seemed to
be interrupted, but elements of SP2 showed up), I kept getting a message
saying that c:\$Mft was corrupt. Also, my page file kept being set to 0, even
when I clicked on the advanced tab in System to adjust it. I removed SP2, but
I keep getting the corrupt file message. System Restore and GoBack did not
work. I also remember seeing an 800704B8 error message. Anybody know how I
can fix this?

The problem you are experiencing is totally unrelated
to SP2. For a possible solution, please read:

What is the MFT (Master File Table) and how can I manage it?

the topic titled "Defrag on boot - Enable/Disable".

You might wish to consider purchasing a more powerful
and thorough defragmenter program, such as PerfectDisk,
which has the capability to defrag both the MFT and pagefile
offline.

No thanks. The best solution is to remove SP2 and restore what I had before.
SP2 is a piece of junk.

If that was the case, why wasn't the issue resolved when you removed SP2?

Believe it or not, some computer problems are *not* caused by SP2, and yours
is one of them. Why come to a newsgroup asking for help if you are just
going to spit in the face of the kind people (i.e. Carey Frisch) who go out
of their way to provide it for you?

Trying again to remove SP2, I finally got my computer back to working. I
stand by my previous comments concerning SP2. It was not my intention to
"spit" in anybody's face, however, SP2 does deserve such spitting and I make
no apologies for that.

No it doesn't, not for those of us that have installed it succesfully (which
will be the majority of uswers BTW,) without any problems. On the other hand
the very few users like yourself that behave so obnoxiously towards others
who try to help you with your problems installing it deserve your
apologies....

Bottom line is that your install of SP2 failed because of something you did,
or rather *failed* to do before trying to install SP2.

Did you follow ANY of the steps that Microsoft strongly recomends before
starting the install? Or did you just rush in and let it hapen as soon as
it was available without any preparation at all?

I'm picking the latter......

Yes, it does. I believe that, if you look at the situation so far, the only
conclusion can be to hold off SP2 at this time. I have no intention to act
obnoxiously to people, only to SP2 itself, My apologies to those people
offended. Also, when an update to an operating system is posted, there should
not be such an extensive and technical list of things to do to get your
system ready. I have never heard of Apple, for example, having such problems
with an update. But, since Windows, as we all know, is such a hellish
operating system, such problems should not be unexpected. I will try to calm
down and not expect too much again. Sorry.

Of course there should. Upgrade a Linux distro you have to prepare for that;
Same with any OS upgrade.

Perhaps you missed the latest upgrade to the Apple OS had a major bug that
was initially denied by Apple then fixed with a patch.....

It isn't to me and most users who actually know how to do basic maintenance
on their computer and OS.
YMMV but that's not the fault of the OS, your computer, or Microsoft....

> such problems should not be unexpected.

Such unexpected problems are 99% of the time traceable back to user error,
lack of knowledg/experience, or just plain laziness...

It takes me all of 30-45mins a day to backup my computer; It takes my about
an hour to do weekly maintenace; and about two hours once a month for
monthly maintenance. That is why I NEVER have problems updating my computer
with Microsofts updates.
Of course you *dont have to do any of that* but as you have found you WILL
suffer the consequences eventually.....

> I will try to calm
> down and not expect too much again. Sorry.

You CAN expect a lot more from your computer when you look after it.....

When was the last time you backed up your computer?
When was the last time you defrgged the hard drives, ran drive cleanup?
When was the last time you checked to see if your antivirus software was up
to date?
When was the last time you checked your computer to see if it had any
spyware on it?

You can and should be doing all of the above on a regular basis.

For example my daily virus scan has just finished running after it had
automatically updated itself (that SP2 reported BTW); It has been running
while I have been typing this. Any minute now my daily system state backup
will start and that also run in the background while I'm using my computer,
as will my daily backup, the registry backup and the IE and OE backups at
their scheduled times....

You too can have your system running like this if you *really* want to.....

Here's you running Microsoft Operating systems and apparently having *HUGE*
problems.....

Here's me doing the same, and NOT having any of the problems you're having
(and that say/believe I should be having)

What do YOU see wrong with this 'picture' JonS?
