Our fellow Primates in Evolution... I call on thee to help us get our
machines, using the ill-fated windows xp either home or professional, to get
windows update up and running.

We have tried the impossible, We cleaned up the directory where the
verification tools, exist, deleted the TEMP folder, Changed the name of the
windows update folder and data files every trick in the "evolutionary book"
have been applied.

Please help us our fellow primates, I call on you to remember our common
ancestral heritage.

Remember it is either a banana or peanut butter.

Guys/Ladies...this is serious, stop monkeying around. it is incoceivable for
a company like microsoft to leave its "genunine" customers lost out there.
What is wrong with you? is that how you treat those who purchase windows
rather than those who copy it.

Come on, show us what we've paid our money for.

Stop monkeying around and use some brain-power.

You cannot install some updates or programs

I am not a monkey nor did I evolve from one but you on the other hand must
have since you have a problem that do not have.

Carey,

Do you think the countless posts by unsatisifed and frustrated customers is
"monkeying around." Your approach to resolving a very serious and frustrating
issue has led people on wild goose chase and even belittling them. My machine
was SOLID until the new update program you installed. I am running Windows
2000 Pro and have had nothing but "Page not found" or [Error number:
0x80072EE2]
The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are
trying to view. The options provided below might help you solve the problem.

Every since the new Window's update software was installed, I continue to
get the error listed above when going to do an update. It searches for
updates already installed and then prompts [Error number: 0x80072EE2] .

I have turned off al Norton software and searched through the other
posts...but no luck! This is frustrating. Is there anyone that can advise me
on a straightforward fix?!!!

Thanks much.

SYMPTOMS
If you try to use the Microsoft Windows Update Web site, you receive one of
the following error messages:
Error 0x80072EE2
Error 0x80072EFD
Additionally, the %SYSTEMROOT%\Windowsupdate.log file may have an entry that
is similar to the following entry:
005-06-01 18:31:12 992 158 Misc WARNING:
SendRequest failed with hr = 80072efd. Proxy List
used: <(null)> Bypass List used : <(null)> Auth Schemes used : <(null);>

CAUSE
This issue occurs because the Windows Update client did not receive a timely
response from the Windows Update Web site server. A timely response is not
generated if the Windows Update Web site server is affected by a
network-related issue.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, use Method 1 or use Method 2.

Method 1: Home users or users who are not behind a proxy server
Step 1: Verify Internet connectivity
Make sure that you can successfully access other Web sites. If you can
successfully access other Web sites, your Internet connection is working
correctly.
Step 2: Verify your personal firewall program settings
If you have a personal firewall program installed, you might have to
reconfigure or update the personal firewall program. The Windows Update
client runs in an instance of Svchost.exe. This Svchost.exe instance requires
access to the Internet. For more information about how to reconfigure or
update your firewall program, see the documentation that was included with
the program, view the Help files for your program, or contact the program
vendor. For information about how to contact the program vendor, click the
appropriate article number in the following list to view the article in the
Microsoft Knowledge Base:
65416 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/65416/) Hardware and software vendor
contact information, A-K

60781 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/60781/) Hardware and software vendor
contact information, L-P

60782 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/60782/) Hardware and software vendor
contact information, Q-Z
Step 3: Add Windows Update Web sites to the Trusted Sites list
Add the Windows Update Web sites to the Trusted Sites list in Internet
Explorer. To do this, follow these steps:1. Start Microsoft Internet
Explorer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
3. Click the Security tab, and then click Trusted Sites.
4. Click Sites, and then click to clear the Require server verification
(https for all sites in this zone check box.
5. In the Add this Web site to the zone box, type the following addresses,
clicking Add after you type each address:
http://update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.microsoft.com
6. Click OK two times.

Step 4: Remove Windows Update entries from the hosts file
Some programs may modify the hosts file to control DNS name resolution.
Sometimes, an entry for the Windows Update Web site may exist in the hosts
file. To remove Windows Update entries from the hosts file, follow these
steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type notepad
%windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts, and then click OK.
2. Remove any lines that contain entries for Windows Update. For example,
remove the following entry if the entry exists:
http://update.microsoft.com
3. On the File menu, click Save.
4. Quit Notepad.
5. Restart the computer.

Note If you do not want to restart the computer, flush the DNS resolver
cache. To do this, follow these steps:a. Click Start, click Run, type cmd,
and then click OK.
b. At the command prompt, type ipconfig /flushdns, and then press ENTER.

Step 5: Remove the proxy server entry from the WinHTTP proxy configuration
If you are not located in a corporate network, or if you do not use a proxy
server to connect to the Internet, clear the WinHTTP proxy configuration. To
do this, follow these steps:1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then
click OK.
2. At the command prompt, type proxycfg -d, and then press ENTER.

Method 2: Corporate users or users who are behind a proxy server
If you use a proxy server to connect to the Internet, see the following
Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article for information about how the Windows
Update client detects and uses proxy servers:
900935 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900935/) How the Windows Update
client determines which proxy server to use to connect to the Windows Update
Web site

Was such an excursion necessary? Certainly not...before
WU/WGA.

Carey, instead of giving me that "flower" power speech. offer us something
new. We've been there tried that. And still it doesn't work. This stupid
thing, the windows update website designers done with the site is stupidly
tenacious. I've changed directories name, changed the files names,
unregistered a number of .dll files, had the system runnig up and again. For
crying out loud, at one moment, I relayered my windows, again, with the SP 2
service pack. No use.

This is called "indifference". And if microsoft's is thinking that by
adding a "depressingly" aesthetic face-lift to the windows update site, to
slip in their new" kiddi" toy called the "verification" tool is doing itself,
before us a favor, then I would say..."Thumbs down". This policy of
collateral damage of let a few millions suffer, just to get the tool up and
running is pathetic and inconceivable on the side of a company of a global
stature as microsoft.

All you have done is provided very little information to go on,
but you spent the bulk of your post whining and complaining.
I suggest you contact Microsoft directly and ask for assistance.

To resolve the Error 0x80072EE2 and/or Error 0x80072EFD when accessin
windows update, you have to:
1.)Add and/or Set the DWORD value for MTU
under your adapter’s interfaceID in the registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{interfaceid}\
to 1480 or higher
or
2.) Add and/or Set the DWORD value for EnablePMTUBHDetect an
EnablePMTUDiscovery to 1 in the registry under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters.

The second method (2.) is probably more reliable esp. if you trave
with a laptop and are using different wireless networks, but doe
create a security risk. The first method will work if you are sure you
network will support the larger MTU

Kungfoo,

I am having the same issues with 0x80072EFD - I tried what you
suggested on a machine and its not working.

This is only happening since V6 of M$updates and now 50% of my clients
can;t evenupdate with the SUS server :-(

Any other ideas?
